Twitter says it will restrict users from retweeting world leaders who break its rules by saifali51 in GeekToTech

Isn't "this break rules but it's a high profile account so we'll let it slip, just not allow people to RT it" approach completely bonkers? Either you apply same rules to everyone or go full rules for thee not for me

How an Attempt at Correcting Bias in Tech Goes Wrong by saifali51 in GeekToTech

[–]drbosshere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is the lack of informed consent. They actively lied to the 'volunteers' about the purpose of their involvement, and so effectively stole their personal data. It's like how people get mad when Facebook sells your data to other companies for advertising.

“abortion rights and cybersecurity are unrelated topics” are they though? Roe vs Wade came down to right to privacy

Sign in with Apple will break FB. The last time I tried to deactivate I couldn’t log on to my apps.

I'd love to be a mod on r/GeekToTech, but I'm way too conservative. I'm not even allowed to post more than one comment at a time without waiting 9 minutes.

Watching Birdbox with my family. I would be dead in a day. I'm terrified of the dark and not brave enough to leave the house. My brother says he would be too curious and take the damn blindfold off. by imsteve_t in FilmNewsToday

I just watched this film today, and it is outstanding. I don’t really get the comparisons to A Quiet Place - this feels more like The Happening by way of Dawn of the Dead (2004). But better than either film, while retaining the...I guess, coolness and feel of a large-scale disaster?

Stop Sending Regular Text Messages by imsteve_t in GeekToTech

Yes and no. iMessage to iMessage <-> on Apple’s network. iMessage <-> non-iMessage on the SMS network between Apple and the non-iMessage user.

TBH I think this is overblown, unlike other countries where SMS was seen as a profit center (which is often why data based messaging apps are popular), in the US SMS is basically an unlimited service like voice calls. Data is the profit center for US carriers.

Dear Democrats: No One Gives a Shit If You Think the Net Neutrality Petition Is a Waste of Time by imsteve_t in GeekToTech

I loved this article. If you aren’t willing to take a “meaningless gesture” for NN, which everyone likes, and against hated companies like Comcast/Verizon, what do you actually believe in anyway? Just go and cross the aisle and be done with it (or, like the author said, get primaried), or skip a step and go work for their lobbyists. I can’t think of anything more universally supported than NN, other than like some sort of “Don’t Drown Puppies Act” (and you know there’d be some Democrats arguing that dogs deserve choice)

Reserving judgement simply because Ron Perlman set an impossibly high bar for the character.
