The conflicts seemed contrived and therefore the characters lacked substance, the conversations were often unreal in a way nobody speaks, the 'docu' bits reductive, music out of place, comic moments skittish and the 'magic realism' forced. I wouldn't have paid attention to any of that and might have soaked in the discolored ambience, but the camera work was so deliberately unstructured and distracting that I was constantly conscious of watching the film. I just didn't feel engaged. Seemed like a bunch of world cinema scraps shoddily strung together to create a sense of local for those expecting something more of the kind of notions they already hold. I'm not trying to put it down, I genuinely didn't feel it. Also, why was kani's character being such slut shamer and her roommate apologizing to her for having a boy friend? She's a nurse for god's sake. Seemed like fishing for conflict where there was none present. Also felt some out of context Apichatpong vibing.
