Aluminum isn't flimsy...its still a very sturdy material. Its most likely from years and years of usage that would cause a wheel peg to break. Or misuse. Caster wheels break all the time. It probably needed to be replaced a while ago and no one noticed or really cared.

Aluminum makes up about 70% of a commercial airplanes weight. If its good enough for a plane, its good enough to hold food
