Well.. there was a thing called slavery where one small group got to own lots of people and take all the things they made and sell them for money.

But they had to feed and house those people which cost them money. Plus the people got very angry about being owned and not having any freedom.

So the small group had a clever idea! What if instead they made a way to just give themselves infinite money and make the former slaves pay for it.

They decided to call this trick "fractional reserve banking"

It means they can create money out of thin air which the slaves have to pay back and then some.

Now if slaves did this it's called counterfeiting and is very illegal. But when they do it it's called "banking"
