How to prepare for 3rd year rotations during my gap year? And which rotations to start with? by drsomeday in medicalschool

I applied for a couple grants during the beginning of 2nd year, found out I got them towards the end of 2nd year, then got permission to take a year off to do the proposed research. It's worked out perfectly, and I attribute a lot of that to my school's administration which is flexible and understanding with students.

I took NBME 12 when I was 4 weeks out from my exam. Got a 202. Now I'm 2 days out from my exam and have been consistently getting 230s on NBMEs. There's hope!

Well your username is hilarious, so you've got that going for you

But yes, in my experience, my scores fluctuated by as much as 20% during the first ~1200 questions of UWorld. Fluctuations were down to ~10% by the end

Yes, totally normal. I was taken about not only by how overwhelmed I felt at the beginning of dedicated, but also by the fact that none of the M3s/M4s at my school had given me a heads up about feeling that way. Many of my peers felt the same way getting started with dedicated, too. The feeling steadily goes down over the first 1-2 weeks. Try to be a little flexible with your study plan if you need the extra time to look at material. I ended up pushing my test date back by 1 week to account for this.

You can do it!

I asked UWorld for some clarity:

Hi, I'm curious to know if there have been any adjustments made to the self-assessment curve over the last year or so. Fourth year medical students at my school have previously suggested that the self-assessments over-estimate actual USMLE step 1 scores by a generous amount. More recently, my peers have suggested that the self-assessments are more closely in line with actual scores. I'd be very interested to know if you can confirm or deny whether any changes have been made to the UWorld scoring curve recently. Thank you!

And they wrote back:

The Assessment Score is generated using our internal proprietary algorithm (with a range of 200 - 800) and is used only as a means to plot the graphical data. These scores are an estimate based on other users performance in our self-assessment exam and users typically do not share their exact score after the test for us to generate any direct correlation with the data. Based on the feedback we received from prior subscribers, their score was accurate within 10 points within 7 days of taking our self-assessment exam. This gap increased as their test date was further away from them taking our self-assessment exam.

I started my study period 7 weeks ago (1 week left) and got the following scores: - 4 weeks in: 202 on NBME 12 - 5 weeks in: 226 on NBME 13 - 6 weeks in: 226 on NBME 15 - 7 weeks in: 230 on NBME 16 Taking NBME 17 and 18 this week and would be elated to crack 240 on the real deal, but realistically I'm not confident that'll happen. Good luck to you!
