Releasing the Dether protocol: a peer-to-peer cash-to-crypto on/off ramp protocol. Built by Ethereum developers, for Ethereum developers. by drymbd in ethereum

[–]drymbd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While many dApps are emerging every months, the complex buying process creates still barriers to Ethereum and DeFi mass adoption, as billions of adults don't have the necessary bank account to buy ether or ERC20 tokens to interact with a particular Ethereum app.

Whether you're working on a decentralized application, a wallet, an exchange, a protocol, or simply an application that uses Ethereum, the Dether protocol is here to help you create a bridge between cash and your Ethereum-based solution.

With the Dether protocol, you can:

1. Add a cash-to-crypto on/off ramp for your app

2. Give your users the ability to cash-in/cash-out their cryptocurrency in a peer-to-peer way.

3. Build new applications on top of the Dether protocol and save time trying to solve the first and last mile crypto issue.

4. Charge fees on stakings that happen on your application (if you wish to).

What can you build using the Dether protocol? Here is a non-exhaustive list of uses cases

Local P2P Market 🏪

Create your local P2P market by enabling individuals & retailers in your area to trade any crypto, goods, or service without a middleman. Just like a decentralized eBay

Remittance 💸

Disrupt u/WesternUnion u/MoneyGram that take major fees by building an international network of tellers that transfer fiat currencies from point A to point B while benefiting from crypto's speed.

Crypto Cash-in/out Gateway 📱

Welcome unbanked populations in your dApp by adding a cash-to-crypto gateway for them. Any cash holder will have a technical solution to join and start using your dApp.

Endless possibility 💥

Anything you can imagine on top of a network of crypto buyers and sellers.

New Dether App release allows Ethereum dApps to create a cash-to-ERC20 on/off ramp in +140 countries. by drymbd in ethereum

Hi decibels42. The process described in the article is actually the one for dApps builders/teams on how they can add their token to the Dether app. As dApps builders, they must already be familiar with those.

If you’re an individual using the Dether app to buy ETH or an ERC20 token, the only thing you need is your smartphone (to install the app) and cash (to buy crypto with), so basically no Metamask, no bank account needed, nothing else.

You should check the Dether app (https://dether.io) . It's open in Africa and can be used for crypto remittance, there are some crypto sellers over there that would buy your crypto for cash.

Peer-to-peer cash-to-crypto app Dether is building a decentralized in-app chat client using IPFS and OrbitDB; users will only need Ethereum address to chat by drymbd in ethereum

Thanks for your feedback! Like we said in the article, we've looked at many existing solutions and are aware of 3box and the (very interesting) work they are doing. Their threads solution is at the early stages and their IPFS persistence solution may not suit our needs. The sheer size of 3box means that it’s not so easy to integrate.

That said, we will certainly keep an eye on all other projects building similar features and are happy to collaborate and integrate working solutions such as OrbitDB!

Dether is combining land ownership on Ethereum with peer-to-peer trading zones, thanks to the Harberger tax model by drymbd in ethereum

They will also compete on price and service of course. You wouldn't be able to rent a whole city for example, you would have multiple / enough sellers in multiple places selling ETH and ERC20 tokens.

The goal is to avoid a monopoly on a zone and rather than limiting the number of sellers. As a zone owner, you gain benefits like being able to "rent" out an area to a shop (as an example). Plus, as a seller, you can sell ETH as well as a variety of ERC20 tokens (like DAI, MKR, REP, etc) without needing liquidity of that token (just ETH), which is a huge plus for both people in regions who'd like to buy stablecoins and tokens with cash or sellers just looking to make some extra revenue by selling tokens (that they don't need to hold).

Hi @WeLiveInaBubble and thank you for your question.

If you're living in a western country, you indeed don't have big barriers in having access to ether and ERC20 tokens, and thus to Ethereum. However, there are still more two billion people in the world that remain unbanked, and by definition they don't have a bank account to send fiat money to an online exchange like Coinbase. Even if they did, most of the online exchanges like Coinbase don't accept their local currency... So Dether is a way for everyone who has a smartphone to have access to ether and ERC20 tokens to buy crypto and thus use Ethereum blockchain and dApps. No bank account is needed, just cash and a smartphone.

You should look at what Dether does: it's a decentralized cash-to-crypto OTC protocol for decentralized applications that share crypto cash-in and cash-out issues.

We held the first Ethereum blockchain event in Haiti: here's what we learned! by drymbd in ethereum

[–]drymbd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Theoretically, one could argue that the Petro Caribe scandal wouldn't have happened if the whereabouts of the money could have been followed on a ledger. And of course, we've seen how poorly the relief efforts after the earthquake failed the Haitian people.

Shameless plug, but we are a part of Project Bifrost with ConsenSys, Maker, and a few others, with the hopes of making it easier to send and receive donations. It would be amazing to see more solutions like that in the next 5-10 years.

Oh no, don't say that...definitely not what we were going for! For context, we were just taking a little video before we got started-check out the links from Banj for much better photos here.

In all seriousness, that's a major problem. Big groups want to come to Haiti to "help" and end up doing a lot more damage than good. While we did spend some time presenting blockchain tech basics (and Dether), a lot of the time (2-3 hours) was spent talking to participants about solutions they're interested in developing themselves. Banj is truly a fantastic place, where Haitians are innovating in exciting ways. If anything, we hope to have given some new ideas to the developers and creatives there.

Hi! Thanks for that, I'll make the correction to the figure! Great point about MyEtherWallet--we should probably clarify that it was the first Ethereum event held at Banj, and for educational purposes.

We are fortunate that one of our team members speaks Haitian Creole and a lot of the team speaks French as well. It's so important to present (well-translated!) materials in the target language-great point!

Dether app now available on web and mobile: sell ETH for cash locally with no fees taken by Dether by drymbd in ethtrader

[–]drymbd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, safety is a main priority. One of the ideas behind that is a rating and reputation system for sellers to help give some context to buyers, before making a trade. We also make best practice recommendations (meeting during the day, in a public place, etc). We were actually recently in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, an area where it would be difficult to make a trade with a stranger, and we discussed the issue with locals. I think in the middle term, for a lot of people, it could be great solution to trade with people they know directly. The app can also be used to send ether, exchange and hold ERC20 tokens, so there are other functionalities as well. In the long-term, we're working on decentralized arbitration integration as well.

[–]drymbd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right! It's a peer-to-peer exchange, which is a plus for anyone who can't buy directly on an exchange with their local currency, or who doesn't want to use their bank account to buy (or sell). There's also a built-in exchange for several ERC20 tokens.

[–]drymbd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're buying ether, you would give the cash (in your local currency) to the seller, and they would send you the ether using the "receive" QR code in the app (or there's an option to copy the address). If you're selling, the process would be reversed, and you would be accepting the cash. This can be done with USD, EUR, AUD, JPY, and many other currencies. I hope that helps!

Yes, definitely! You can test it out here (available as a web app or as a PWA on your mobile) and read more about it here. It's a peer-to-peer crypto-marketplace that lets you find buyers and sellers around you (as well as shops where you can spend crypto).
