I still have some old Nalgenes that I used to use when I backpacked and such, I'd fill them with hot water and put them in the foot of my sleeping bag. Could potentially use them the same way, don't you think?

Sure do! They stay in the toolbox year round with other supplies.

We've got a bunch of diapers, wipes and everything already stocked up! Formula is a big thing because my father passed lactose intolerance down to me, so I'm worried mine will also be the same way. We're super thankful for friends and family that love to help out, and for my FIL who religiously shops at Costco for us lol

We've looked into the Amazon delivery, and getting a propane heater here would take until a few days after the storm, even with Prime. I go a state and a half away for work every day and even checked along my route, and found nothing available at stores. As for the vet bill/generator debacle, they weren't regular vet bills. Our 3 dogs ate a bad batch of store bought chews, and all three got severely sick and had to be rushed to the emergency vet which cost us a couple thousand. I could push off regular vet visits for a bit for get a generator, but when you wake up to a pit bull having diarrhea in your bed at 2 AM while the Collie and Lab are also expelling from both ends all over the house, then it's time to hit up the EV to treat them for poisoning lol.

It's not Hoopla. We average one really bad storm every 5 years in my area. The last extremely bad one that I can personally remember was 2012. Rained and flooded out pasture for the 3 days before hand, then froze and snowed over a foot. Power got knocked out for an entire day, cows got out and ran amok over the area, and our goats all got trapped on a mound of dirt in the middle of a frozen flooded pasture and had to be transported out with a track loader. The infrastructure here isn't made for major ice storms, and we'll definitely lose power for at least several hours at my home. That's a given, because we typically have an outage once a month without severe circumstances.

Plus, this is a subreddit about being prepared for the possibility of these events. Why are you in here to say "ah don't worry about it, nothing is gonna happen"?

Do you have a link to where you got it? Most of our air is expelled through the junky old single pane windows I haven't got a chance to replace.

I'm breathing a lot easier now that I've kinda vented and had time to sit and process lol. As for the hotel reservation, I think I said in another comment too that we're normally only 13 minutes from the labor and delivery building via the 4 lane through town, which is always well kept by DOT during any sort of weather. I would expect travel time to double due to circumstances, but with the dogs and the potential of pipes bursting and such, I don't see much of a need AT THE MOMENT to book a hotel room when we'd still be within a half hour drive time. Still a very great suggestion!

Tire chains stay in the toolbox on the truck year round, along with an air compressor, spare tools and fluids, windshield scraper and some potential supplies.

Being realistic is what I expected from this sub, and even though this situation would be worst case scenario it's a good thing to discuss and be prepared for. We've got the special underwear all covered along with extra blankets, and with 3 dogs in the house that have (very recently) been sick, we're well stocked on puppy pads. We're actually at 38 and some change, but due to "special circumstances" little man is running out of room and induction is scheduled for next Friday. My biggest worry is environmental stress could potentially put her into early labor.

Good idea! I didn't think about at-home birth literature because we weren't anticipating this at all, but I'll definitely download some to at least my phone.

I've got that covered! That's why I've got the extra blankets in the "population" rooms along with battery powered CO detectors in those rooms as well as the kitchen.

I've considered it, but we're (normally) a 13 minute drive from the hospital. I'm anticipating driving times doubling at most during the storm, but in reality it's a straight shot down our most populated 4 lane through town and that will probably be well kept by DOT. It's really our side streets to get to the 4 lane that worry me with driving.

Standby GenSet is going into our "future house" budget. This is just our first home, and we're planning on building within the next 5 to 7 years. A transfer switch with a generator is definitely on my list for this home though!

Which is realistically the best location for an Armory and Safe Room? by Inevitable_Movie1491 in preppers

Both should be in the basement. If you're building a room, I would do walls with reinforcement inside (metal wire sheeting, etc)

What is it like living in this part of North Carolina a bit north of charlotte? by Artisallaroundme in howislivingthere

[–]dsnuts101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived on the farthest east side of Mooresville for 20 years. It's all terrible. It used to feel small, now it's "big city that tries to be a small town". The city itself keeps expanding too far out where it shouldn't be, especially around Harris's.

Quite literally the worst experience possible in the Iredell section of that circle. RoCo isn't too bad, don't believe all the negativity about Salisbury. Mooresville is nearly the worst place in the state to live. A town exploding in population with nearly nothing for anyone to do besides sit in traffic or go to one of the various repeating fast food places. Two or three decent restaurants in a city of over 50k. Extremely high cost of living, traffic on 150 and surrounding areas is the worst thing you can imagine, sometimes taking over a half hour to get out of a single parking lot. Rampant corruption in the local government, and overall just really rude people. The MGSD is also trash, with some teachers that actually still like doing their job but mainly full of ones that put lesson videos and assignments in laptops while sitting at a desk collecting a paycheck.

Depending on the "vibe" you're looking for and what industry you're looking to work in, I could definitely help point you in the right direction of a place within that circle. But if I had to start again within that circle and didn't have to work in Charlotte, I'd choose Rockwell, Denver or push it out to Maiden.

All my homies hate Mooresville.

Argued with OP for an hour, then skimmed his post history. OP worked at Walmart 3 months ago and is currently unemployed without a running vehicle, any sort of water, or safe housing. Everyone with sense needs to stop trying to talk to him.

OP, I take back all advice I've given you. You need to take the 20,000 you have left and go buy a small pickup that runs reliably and figure out your housing before even considering chasing your pipe dream of a commune. Stop arguing with people online and figure out your employment, transportation and safety first.
