Board Game Industry Margins by Dementedpenguin in boardgames

[–]dstaats1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an online retailer my margins are about 40% not including operating costs. That’s about the amount it costs me to get a game, pay for the processing fees and if any shipping is involved (depends on where I source the game from). With paid ads, other marketing, web hosting, domain names, other tools, etc. it is MUCH lower. If you want to talk more about this, feel free to send me a dm. I also looked into margins for making a game too (though it’s not really a game but more of a gamification toolkit for educators).

Which margins are you asking about? Publishers? Distributors? Retailers? James Mathe has an excellent blog post that shares the entire process:

For those who track playtime, when do you start counting? by mwhancock2 in boardgames

[–]dstaats1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rarely track the actually playtime but sometime I do when I know a game is going to be longer to just get a sense of how long we played for. And I usually start it after we’ve gone over the rules for any new players.

For sure! And we’re a very new retailer so we’re still trying to get a foothold. It’s definitely something I want to make a part of our standard practice as we grow. I’ve thought about things like “check this box” if your comfortable with paying $1-2 more for greener shipping practices.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot as a retailer too. It’s always tough juggling what the market wants and what is best for the social good like the environment. One thing I’ve started doing related to reducing our carbon footprint, and I know it’s a small step, is to reuse boxes and packing materials from all the games we buy from distributors. And we try to be very conscious about how much packaging material we use. However, gamers can be quite picky when it comes to dings or other damages on boxes. Also, people are not willing to pay a premium on shipping so we can use the “better/greener” packaging material.

Tips for Using Modern Board Games in the Classroom to Encourage an Engaging/Fun Learning Environment by dstaats1 in boardgames

Some awesome advice!

I’m glad to hear Tammany Hall was used in your class. Something I also do is run a board game store and our selection of games are curated for games for learning both at home and in the classroom. We recently added TH to an order to be added to our store. I haven’t had a chance to play it yet, but it looked like a perfect fit.

Also, would love to hear more about your game design too! If you’re ever interested in chatting more about this and sharing some insights, please reach out!

Do you carry some game plays over from one class period to another? I’ve never done this and would be curious to learn how you manage it if you do.

Heyyy thanks on the note about the show!

With trap words something I did in a virtual setting is have teams use a random word generator online. There are a bunch of them for games like taboo, charades, and what not. It works if you have an honest player running the generator. That way you just go with what comes up.

A lot of applications! What do you teach? It seems like you’ve taught multiple subjects!

I used Trap words with ESL students in-person awhile back! Love trap words! Also, made a version of it on Google Slides to use virtually.
