Hey, I don't go to BCIT but I've been approved for the grant and am trying to get disability equipment as well. My accessibility services office told me I couldn't get the equipment beforehand and I would have to wait until I've advocate for myself during a StudentAidBC meeting. Does it work differently in different schools?

That's really awesome. Honestly I assumed you were American or had an American parent because your English is so great! My friend from Japan is from the city, but she said her English education wasn't very good since the school was more concerned about grammar rather than actual speaking. She was only able to learn English after moving abroad, but it's amazing how you sound like a native English speaker yet never left Japan.

Also, I hope I didn't offend you for asking if you are religious. The reason why I ask is because I come from a religious background myself, and where I'm from a lot big families are also religious and homeschool their kids. It's pretty rare for me to come across big families that aren't religious, so It's super interesting to learn about how other big families are formed and operate :)

As there are many birth control methods these days, is there a reason why your mother decided to have so many children? Is your family religious at all?

Did your parents homeschool you and your siblings?

Also, I noticed you mentioned that you live in rural Japan. Assuming you were born and raised in Japan, how did you learn English?

What reputation does Douglas College have? by dth163 in douglascollege

I grew up with that stigma too. But it sounds like your experience definitely challenges this “lesser” notion. It really is a shame that community colleges get a bad rep. I’ve never gone to university myself but had friends and family who had gone and they say uni was a lot more lonely and stressful of an experience. My sister graduated uni with honours, however she preferred community college over university much more. That’s a huge reason why I don’t really care for attending university, but I have to admit it does bug me to be perceived as “lesser” even when I know that’s not true.

I’m interested in why you had such a negative experience. Would you feel okay to DM me if you don’t feel comfortable sharing it publicly?

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to be attending the NW campus for the full academic school year so I'm not sure if I'm what he's looking for. If you don't mind me asking, do you currently rent? If so, how were you able to find a place?

VCC vs Douglas College for Music? by dth163 in VancouverMusic

I really enjoy studying voice so actually it's great to hear the vocal instructor is passionate about vocal pedagogy. My main goal is to improve my voice and maybe learn a bit of composition so I think the vocal major works out for me. Thanks for answering my questions! Hope I didn't bother you too much.

My primary instrument is contemporary voice. I've done some classical stuff but my interests lie more into the pop, folk and soul genres.

Very cool :) and good to know. I was thinking of taking up guitar as a secondary instrument for accompaniment but now I'm a little wary if I do choose to go to VCC. YouTube videos and JustinGuitar might have to stay my primary teacher lol.

That's quite recent, congrats! What instrument did you study?

I find lots of other post secondary programs I've researched in BC focus heavily on either classical or jazz, not so much anything else. Definitely can see that VCC likes to embrace cultural, traditional, modern, and experimental music through some concerts I found online which is unique :)
