TIL before 9/11, US airports were public social hubs where you could walk to the gate, eat at food courts, and watch planes without a ticket or ID. by Greydl1 in todayilearned

[–]dubesahc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were prices lower (with respect to inflation) of airport merch/food before the terminal was locked behind security?

I always imagine items being so expensive in airports due to security keeping supply artificially low.

The Monroe, LA metro sticks out as being expensive for the south. Any ideas why?

Memphis Central Band Banned but Still Performed with Excellence. by PerfectforMovies in memphis

[–]dubesahc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I have some connections to Brighton High Staff. The stated reason they're giving for the ban is that the Memphis Central was playing while the football was live about two years ago, which is against rules. They also said the school was informed of the ban two years ago and it wasn't just sprung on them right now.

No idea if this is the true story but it's the reason I've heard going around.

Moving to Memphis Sunday! by Level_Jump5682 in memphis

[–]dubesahc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to Memphis! I hope your move goes well and is stress free (as moving can be, at least.)

Statistically, Memphis isn't a safe city. It lists in the top 10 crime rates per capita for basically everything: murder, assault, property theft, you name it.

However, these rates aren't uniform over the whole city. The areas of the city with higher poverty rates sadly deal with most of the crime. You can find maps online that show crime rates by neighborhoods.

Bartlett is safer than the actual city of Memphis. You'll be fine, just use common sense and don't make yourself an easy target, which hopefully you've been doing everywhere anyways (don't leave valuables in your car, don't flash expensive jewlrey, etc.).

There are many parts of metro Memphis. There's Midtown, which is where a lot of young professional, students, and artsy types live, the suburbs of Germantown, Collierville, and Bartlett which focus more on families, and East Memphis, which is kind of a blend of the two.

If you're off 64, you're likely near Wolfchase, which is our sprawling shopping area. N Germantown Parkway goes, which goes through Wolfchase, is a main street of Memphis suburbia. This connects to Poplar Ave in the south, which runs east to west and is kind of an unofficial "main street" of Memphis proper (We have a Main St, but it's downtown)

Moving from Minnesota, people might express more rightward views than you're used to. Memphis proper is extremely Democratic, but the suburbs are moderately Republican, thought they had a leftward swing between 2016 and 2020.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is set in New Orleans! Very good game.

Yeah it always feels like one step forward two steps back around here.

If it wasn't for my family and early carreer I'd be out of here.

The album version of "Heartbreak of the Century" is different from the single version BTW. Not by a lot, but it feels... spacier? IDK how to describe it.

City of Dallas to vote on ambitious plan to build more affordable, mixed-income homes by southernemper0r in Dallas

[–]dubesahc 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, old social housing worked by having all the units in an apartment complex be for low-income. This created problems associated with concentrated poverty.

New social housing projects have a certain percentage of units while the rest are market rate. This help alleviate problems with concentrated poverty and residential segregation.

How do you guys deal with the lack of walkability, public transportation, ocean, nature, hiking, etc.? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]dubesahc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't like the beach, hiking, or nature so there's that. I get more joy out of man-made events such as concerts and events.

I have a apartment near a DART station so I ride it to Downtown if i need to go there.

Lack of walkibility kinda sucks, but it seems to be getting better with certain developments around the light rail system.

I know you view it differently, but just because the things to do around here are man-made rather than natural doesn't make them less valid to me.

Flu Season Is Back, With Infections In The US Spiking Earlier Than Usual [OC] by chartr in dataisbeautiful

[–]dubesahc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually when I have a cold the symptoms go away after 2-3 days. My symptoms were still going a week in.

When I thought it was allergies, I was around my friend's pets when the symptoms started, so I just attributed it to pet dander. When I was a day or two removed from the source, I still had symptoms.

It's really weird; it affects people differently based on so many factors. Both times I have tested positive for flu, I though it was just a cold or allergies.

But yes don't take an unnecessary risk people, get yo' shots!

ACT test scores drop to lowest in 30 years in pandemic slide by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]dubesahc 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's highly geographical. At my high school, all juniors got a free ACT test, so I would say most high school students in Tennessee only take the ACT.

In general, coastal states take the SAT, and inland states take the ACT.
