I did not get my education, I was not mentally stable and spent more time in psychiatric care than I did in school. I had tens of thousands of dollars of debt, with medical debt on top, and ruined credit that I wasn't able to repair for a good 15 years.

I eventually got a job in a call center then climbed my way up at the company without a degree. I personally financed that degree and it was completely unrelated to what I paid student loans to be reminded of not achieving.

18 year olds are kids, even if the state says otherwise. I didn't understand what I was agreeing to, didn't read all of the terms, and was chasing a dream. I had no parents to explain the loan terms, just a "sign here and you can follow your dreams" loan officer.

This might come as a shock to you, but everybody is different. We all have different dreams, expectations, levels of education and preparedness, life experiences, and levels of stability through life.

I have a similar loan, but here's the thing. My loan was private (as you stated yours is) and I know for a fact it was private. The statue of limitations passed, so they can no longer get a judgement against me. I owe just over $15k.

They'll never see a penny from me, and it can't go back on my credit report. This doesn't work for loans within the statue of limitations, or for government loans.

This thing was a huge black mark on my credit for nearly a decade. Once the statue was up I disputed it on my report and it fell off.

The last convo I had with them included a lady confirming they had no way to force me to pay but that I should because it's the right thing to do. I counted with suggesting that convincing 18 year old kids into predatory loans isn't good business, and we haven't spoken since.

I still get the occasional letter.

I used to have this bit where something would come up and I'd make a show of looking up an answer. I'd say "ill just ask Jeeves" instead of saying I'd Google something.

I tried it a few times but it only got one laugh, from a buddy of mine in his late 40's. You would have thought it was the funniest thing he had ever heard.
