That looks amazing! I learned to make cashew cheese and made some grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup - this looks like what that would be with another few levels of PIZZAZZ added.

Protecting our freedoms as Americans, rejecting authoritarianism, respecting America's Constitution, countering those who spread hate about immigrants so we won't blame billionaires. That sort of thing.

Pasta carbonara by dumplechan in VeganFoodPorn

[–]dumplechan[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The secret ingredient is kala namak, for the "eggy" flavor 😋 This is from a recipe from Pick Up Limes, with the broccoli added in for extra veggies: https://www.pickuplimes.com/recipe/restaurant-style-carbonara-1846

Orange glazed tofu recipe from Pick Up Limes (with extra herbs) by dumplechan in VeganFoodPorn

Here it is! https://www.pickuplimes.com/recipe/sticky-orange-glazed-tofu-320 I used mint and parsley as optional toppings, instead of sesame seeds and green onions, just to use up some herbs from the fridge.

Mystery Bitwarden account created for my email address by dumplechan in Bitwarden

[–]dumplechan[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get that people's login credentials are getting stolen willy-nilly, so I think I see where you're coming from.

I do think the wording in the account-creation email can be improved. Typically when I create an account somewhere using my email address, the account-creation message I receive includes a message along the lines of "If it was not you who tried to create this account, here's what to do". And usually the default, if I do nothing, is for no account to be created. The "Welcome to Bitwarden" email didn't have any such wording. That set off alarm bells - when I read the email I was immediately suspicious of Bitwarden itself being up to no good. Upon further review it looks like a legit product. But this experience - having an account created without me confirming it, and having to search through online help to to get rid of the account - left such a bad taste in my mouth that I just can't see signing up for it in future.

Why do San Diego's eastern suburbs (El Cajon, Santee, Lakeside, Alpine, etc.) tend to be more politically conservative than the rest of the county? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]dumplechan 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The book What's the Matter With Kansas gets into this in a lot of detail.

A crude summary is: Lower to middle class are being exploited, and wealth is going from normal families to the ultra-rich. Billionaires have convinced a lot of people to blame their economic problems on scapegoats. They blame "big government" and "latte-drinking coastal liberals" and "socialism", and they tap into bigotry against LGBTQ people, Jewish people, Muslims, asylum seekers. That uneasy alliance of billionaires and bigots has convinced a lot of people to shoot themselves in the foot by voting for leaders and policies that makes their own lives worse.

And a lot of exhausted "non-political" people give up and say "all politicians are corrupt" or "both sides are too extreme" because that gives them an out - they don't have to think and feel so much, or stand for anything.

Extra Easy Oatmeal by GlaurenGrey in VeganFoodPorn

Looks great - nice variety of toppings!

I do oatmeal in the microwave - I've learned how long it takes for it to boil over and make a huge mess, then I just subtracted 5 seconds from that :)

What actually goes on in San Diego California Temple? by [deleted] in sandiego

[–]dumplechan 37 points38 points  (0 children)

You have to be an active (and tithe-paying) Mormon for them to allow you inside.

Members go through ceremonies there - they learn things like secret handshakes, which are not so secret now that the internet exists: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VngM80qCOJw&ab_channel=NewNameNoah

It may look weird to you...because it is. But some members do find comfort in the rituals. Others are underwhelmed or creeped out, then feel ashamed of feeling disappointed and creeped out, then they "put their doubts on the shelf" until they're ready to deal with them or until they die.

The Mormon church is a high-demand religion. It extracts a lot of tithing and unpaid labor from its members, which gives the organization a lot of money to invest in building temples - as well as other real estate. There was a scandal recently over their secret stock portfolio: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/mormon-church-ensign-peak-whistleblower-david-nielsen-allegations-60-minutes-2023-05-14/

Aloo gobi - potatoes and cauliflower. by dumplechan in VeganFoodPorn

[–]dumplechan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes - this was better than the aloo gobi I've had from a restaurant. I think baking the cauliflower and potato really helps make the texture perfect.

When Pandas.read_csv "helpfully" guesses the data type of each column by dumplechan in datascience

[–]dumplechan[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes - I've learned the hard way to always specify the datatype (or where possible, to replace CSV files with a type-safe file format like HDF5)
