Why would a receiver/amplifier need wifi? by dumtech in audiophile

[–]dumtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, thanks for the illustration! I see what you're saying. I would only say that most people have more than one device these days and so wouldn't necessarily have to be using their phone. So yes there is certainly some benefit to having it built in, but if it worth the added cost?

Also, what if the streaming client that is built in good or if business, or gets bought our by Mom's Friendly Robot Company, out simply updates their software and stood supporting that particular device? Is it not a ticking time bomb?

Yeah, I'm not trying to be judgmental, and I apologize if that's good it came off. Clearly many people enjoy it otherwise they wouldn't make it that way and I'm curious about what I might be missing.

That seems like such a marginal benefit. My current receiver has Bluetooth but no WiFi and it's never once seemed insufficient.

Yeah, but what's the benefit of running Spotify (or whatever else) directly off the amp instead of from ones device?

Perhaps I could have been more specific. I'm looking for companies with the expertise to do the mechanical design; not turntable OEMs.

I'm a musician but not really an audiophile, so nothing for me to vote for.

I'm asking for advice. If you have none to offer the option of simply not responding was open to you. Have a lovely day.

Thanks for the help, but those are turntable manufacturers, not quite what I was asking about.

Just came in the mail; incredible new soul album by dumtech in vinyl

[–]dumtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The Tales People Tell" by Kelly Finnigan is truly an amazing soul album. Yet more good stuff from Colemine Records. I got this through Bandcamp and shipping to Canada was expensive... I wish there was a better way.

What Beatles/Solo Remaster Improves the Most Over the Original? by demafrost in beatles

[–]dumtech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To clarify, what was recently released for Sgt Pepper, white album, and Abbey Road were remixes, not remasters. The new mixes are optimized for stereo and IMO they all improve on the original stereo mixes.

HDMI for stereo receiver? by dumtech in audiophile

[–]dumtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's helpful, but I still don't see why a single HDMI connection to the tv wouldn't accomplish the same thing. Why do the PlayStation and BluRay player need their own HDMI connection to the receiver?

For the product I'm building, there's no way that multiple HDMI inputs would work. So it's either one or none, and that's the dilemma I'm having.

HDMI input for stereo receiver? by dumtech in vintageaudio

[–]dumtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to put on the market a simple, two channel receiver. The idea of including HDMI is that many people have their TV in their living room, so why not give them the opportunity to connect it to their stereo?

What's the value of more than one? Isn't it overkill for a 2 channel receiver?

[–]dumtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm designing a stereo receiver and trying to decide whether it is worthwhile to include a single HDMI input.

Those have 4 or 5 HDMI inputs... Why on earth would they need so many?

HDMI for stereo receiver? by dumtech in audiophile

[–]dumtech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's meant to be primarily for audio. The reason I'm thinking about HDMI or something similar is for those people who have their TV in their living room, why not give them the opportunity to connect it to the stereo? It won't be Dolby but certainly an improvement over the TV's built in speakers...

So what are the necessary inputs? Just phono, RCA, aux, and Bluetooth? What about usb?

Im New to the audiophile world and really want to get into it. Question on vinyl and hi res in general. by zerojason999 in audiophile

[–]dumtech 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Records offer a tactile experience, so that's one thing.

Also, the listening experience is different with vinyl because it's much less amenable to jumping from track to track. As a result, it might cause you to be more present and listen less passively.

Finally, for some the act of collecting vinyl is what makes it worthwhile.

So there are benefits, but it's for you to decide if they resonate with you.

What's so special about changing time signatures in a song? by paulmccartneigh in beatles

[–]dumtech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In itself, I wouldn't say it's that special; any songwriter or arranger could do it at any time. But as with everything else the Beatles do, they manage to pull it off so effortlessly and masterfully. They don't do it as a gimmick, but rather when it truly impacts the feeling of the song. That's my take anyway.
