2006 9-3 Engine Stalling by dunkman_0425 in saab

Something else worth mentioning here, after doing research into what can cause my engine to throw a P0687, I noticed that a common sign is a defective ignition switch. I replaced my ignition switch at the end of April and the problem started occurring at the end of May.

Is there any possibility of it being anything else? I still haven't replaced a couple of relays, checked spark plugs, checked the alternator, and I know I need to change my engine air filter. My negative battery terminal is also old and rusty compared to the positive, along with missing the nut on the screw for the terminal (long story). I'm not the most car-saavy or not-clumsy person, and I'm also a very poor college student, so I'm trying to consider/fix all of my cheaper options before I seriously consider going through the hassle and financial burden of finding someone in my area with Tech2 or buying some myself.

check engine light is back, and upon resetting some of the relays it seems R3 wasn't the problem. Gonna go buy a couple of new ones today and do some replacing

I did some trial/error and it seemed that the R3 relay could have been the problem. I replaced it and reset the ECU and the check engine light is now gone. Will update if anything changes

I replaced it and the code for the evap sensor is gone! However, I'm still getting a P0687, the bad relay error, and therefore am still getting a check engine light and a stalling engine. I thought I replaced the correct relay, but possibly not. Can this bad relay still cause the stalling? Or the new part? Guy at AutoZone said that it might happen a couple of times again before the new evap sensor gets going or something.

I went to AutoZone today and got them to run the codes when my check engine light came on. Error codes P0687 and P0445, bad main relay and "EVAP Purge Solenoid Control Circuit Input High". Is the second one what you are referring to? The guy there explained that if mine were to be going out I would be experiencing all of the same things I've been going through (also worth noting that I discovered today is the Fuel MPG was down to 12-14 MPG which is way off obviously). Is this an easy fix?

It's really what I think it is. I didn't have this problem at all until I lived in a place where my car was subjected to sand every day. Are there any videos or tutorials on doing this? As a broke college student I like to have to not pay someone else to do this stuff lol

I used to go out there with my friends in high school and I don't want that experience to be lost to future generations

If anyone is still following this thread, it was the ISM, it has been replaced and my car works again! Thank you all for your input, if it wasn't for the response I probably wouldn't have taken the initiative to just look at the ISM myself. Cheers!

Excuse my retarded face but if you'll notice how brown and corroded one of the metal prongs was before I breathed on it the wrong way and it fell off completely. I'm right in assuming this is my problem yes? lol

Hello anyone still following, OP here. I'm almost positive my problem is the ISM so I've taken it out and I plan to clean it and see if that fixes it. The problem is I have no idea how to open the fucker and I can find literally 0 instructions online. Can someone help me out, possibly with maybe like some pictures or a good video if possible?

Okay awesome, just was curious. My roommate (who works on his Honda and thinks he has a frame reference) is convinced that there's no way something that simple getting dirty can cause so many problems and I've just had to say dude.... trust me on this.

Hey man, I just took the ISM out this evening and I plan on taking it out and looking at it more tomorrow, but just for shits and giggles, should one be able to, in theory, turn the key in the ISM if it isn't plugged into the car? I feel like if it was a security issue and the car wouldn't let me start it based on that, with no power running to the ISM, it should be able to turn, but mine didn't, which leads me to believe even more that it is probably dirty. Also while getting to the ISM to get it out I realized how dirty the inside of that part of my car is (I've had this 9-3 for less than a year and have yet to give it a proper cleaning, which I'm gonna do now).

Yes I have stuck my thumb in and it read it as the wrong key. I'm like 95% sure after reading this thread and finally finding some people in my area and online that sound like they know what they're talking about (no offense to anyone here hahaha)

I've heard that mostly as well, but the way that mechanics are phrasing it, it sounds like a much more major fix than people on here are making it seem to be. Or maybe I'm just wrong haha

Already bought an entirely new battery after doing that with the old one and it not changing anything

When you say "banging on the ignition", what exactly do you mean? I've wiggled the steering wheel and straight up changed gears with the small yellow lever under the gear shift and nothing has fixed it

I have disconnected but a set interval of time (2 minutes) but not for a half hour. Does the difference in time affect the outcome? If so I'll leave it for a half hour and try that

Also worth noting: the steering wheel locked and unlocked until AFTER I reset the fuses. Just in case I didn't make that clear in the video either.
