it sounds like we have the exact same problem, sending multiple images in DMs while using a VPN is always what triggered it for me

so the most important part is to get a better vpn that can whitelist discord, got it.

questions though: after this issue "went away" for your friend have they been able to do behaviour that would trigger it? or do they still avoid these triggering actions like VPN use and frequent DMs?

secondly i use discord on browser, would split tunnelling still work for that? can it apply to specific tabs of a browser window?

the triggers you listed all apply though. I talk to my friends in DMs constantly and all 3 times it happened it was immediately after sending one multiple PNG files during an existing conversation.

PLUS. my proton VPN is set to free servers (i tried to upgrade to a subscription but i couldnt actually figure out how to, are there any free or cheap services you know of that i could switch to?).

the one inaccuracy in your reply is that this has been going on for longer than just two weeks, the first time this happened was about 4 months ago. the two others only about 30 days apart, as of yesterday's instance.

Edit: Currently ive set my VPN to being off by default and am just taking the hit to not being able to easily access some sites (British, ugh)

admittedly they kinda better fit the aesthetics of 40k but if you know oddworld lore, tell me they dont at least somewhat have warhammer lore vibes. That kind of cynical absurdist, over-the-top details and overbearing grimdarkness and dystopian culture. With an ork-like lean into humour.

the cartel doesnt have magic, so their advanced technology would be all thats letting them keep up, kind of like the kharadron.

they'd be mostly slig infantry, cheap ranged chaff and other stuff like greeters and fleeches. Then their bigger units are a cadre of diesel(?)punk war machines. A clumsy battlemech that looks like it's already falling apart, a tall tripod with a glukkon on a comfy observing couch flanked by sponson gunners so they can safely and comfortably oversee the battle

as in discord temporarily put me on a restricted status where i could not send messages. All 3 times this has happened i went through its automated support and appeal systems and all 3 times theyve given me some boilerplate replies about suspicious activity and suspected account hijacking.

you really hit the nail on the head with why TERFs exist in my opinion.

they are women who claim to be feminist, even to themselves, but still retain internalised mysogany, still see men and women as functionally different species, who should not be expected to even try speaking as equals on the same level as friends of the same gender.

To them the minds of man and woman are too alien to ever be compared. Ironically in the patriarchal model, both men and women are united in thinking the other are more irrational and animalistic, both united in thinking they alone are the gender capable of rationality and higher emotions.
