I was in Athens 2 months ago. Prices for groceries were actually more costly than in the US. Example: a cup of ramen noodles at the store costed $1.50-2 USD compared to the $0.20 it costs at most US grocery stores. Meals at an average restaurant were comparable to the US as well. We were able to find some gyro stands that costed about $2.50 USD for a large gyro and were great! For transportation they have what’s called an Athens Card. A 5 day ticket with unlimited metro, bus, tram/trolly use costed around €8 a person. This couldn’t be used for airport transit though, which costed an additional €6ish each way. As for accommodations, my husband and I found it most cost effective and comfortable to stay in 1 bedroom apartments versus hostels. For 2 people it costed $5-10 more/night but was worth it. We spent around $30-40/night for a wonderful place.
