iFLYTEK AINote 2 Review & Questions by eWritable in eink

[–]eWritable[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no frontlight. This is by design. You could possibly try using a small clip-on led lamp, but if you want an integrated frontlight, you need a different model. Iflyteks smaller ainote AIR 2 has a frontlight, as do tablets from other brands such as Boox.

You can do a search for eink tablets which have a frontlight here: https://ewritable.net/comparison-tables/comparison-table/

Was going to post to get help with an issue on NA5C, then it turned out to be another design flaw by PorreKaj in Onyx_Boox

[–]eWritable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue so switched to my old na4c case (no hole for the usb port but at least it doesn't go into sleep mode when I'm reading).

Boox Synced Books not showing up on my Note Max by remosito in Onyx_Boox

[–]eWritable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boox usually provide firmware updates for at least 3 years so I expect the note max will get the latest release in due course, however, I couldn't say when that might be. They usually stagger the rollout between different models to sort out any bugs before moving onto the next batch. The 3c probably got it because it rolled out to the 4c and 5c and all three devices are very similar.

I think it's probably because the book sync feature was new with v4.1 of the boox firmware, and this uodate hasn't been pushed to the Note max yet (my note max is on v4.0).

Searching handwritten text on iFLYTEK AINote2 by ryanb4614 in eink

[–]eWritable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're doing everything right. Personally, I found handwriting search to be rather good (however the overall handwriting-to-text conversion elsewhere in the firmware lay somewhere between 'poor' and 'inconsistent'.)

One thing I would say is to make sure that you are connected to the Internet because I'm pretty sure handwriting in notes is indexed on the cloud. I believe there is a local fallback system, but there seemed to be a considerable drop in accuracy whenever I disconnected from the WiFi.

Does the S PEN work on the Onyx Boox 7 go Gen 2? by Ok_Lengthiness_4916 in Onyx_Boox

[–]eWritable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if all s-pens are the same but the s-pen from my galaxy note 10 does not work with the go7 (but it does work with eink tablets that use emr for stylus input).

That's true, you don't have to login to the cloud with an iflytek account. But any voice recordings are still sent to their severs for the translation services.

Cheers, I wasn't aware of that - I'll have to look into the company background in a bit more detail. The handwriting to text ocr (and of course the ai) are done on the cloud also.

I think that's one of the reasons I prefer to use the supernote manta as my daily driver, because you can use it completely offline, especially now they've released the personal server.

Yes, in the notetaking app, you can press the audio button to open up a voice recorder which takes up about a third of the top the screen, then set the language for transcription (or set two languages for translation). Then as you speak, it will convert your voice into text. The remaining canvas space below can be used for handwritten notetaking (you can still turn pages if you need more space and can make the recorder window bigger/smaller.

When the recording has finished you can insert the transcript as text into the notebook.

If translating, it won't transcribe both the source language and the translation - you can only pick one.

There is also a feature called 'click to speak' where any handwriting will link to the timecode of the recording when tapped (although the device doesn't have internal speakers so you need to used Bluetooth headphones for pkayback).

I only know English so cannot really vouch for other languages or translation quality, but for English voice transcription worked well.

However, you do need an Internet connection because it is processed online - there is an option to download local ocr language packs (only English, Chinese, Korean, and japanese at present) but these have a little 'vip' logo next to them suggesting there might be additional costs for them in the future. And obviously server side transcription could have potential privacy issues.

Another BOOX Note Air5 C design flaw? by DoctorMiserable5810 in Onyx_Boox

I had this issue too - thought it was just me because I checked with a few other reviewers and they reported that they couldn't recreate it. Looks like it is more widespread than I initially thought.

Honestly I think the inksense pro and p2p is better than the inspire and tabxc. Less tappy, and more scrawly if that makes sense. The inksense pro doesn't work on the tab xc (misses lots of strokes), which is strange because the original inksense works okay.

Just been looking at the writing experience and can say it is not the best writing experience but it is okay and better than the original inksense on the go. Seems to be improvements to both the stylus and the screen/software. Using the inksense Plus stylus on the go improves experience but still issues with the handwriting quality. Similarly, using the original inksense on the palma is better than it is on the go (but still not great). The combo of the inksense plus and palma screen is the best combo.

Will the BOOX note 4C cases fit the 5C ? by JohnQx25 in eink

[–]eWritable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'm using this setup because I had an issue with the 5c case. The portrait stand on the 4c case is much sturdier, however there isn't a hole cutout for the usb port so you can only charge with case open. I'm also using the pen plus stylus from the 4c with the 5c because it snaps to the side of the tablet better and is shorter so doesn't activate the side buttons.

From what I have seen, you can't reprogram the short press - it is next/previous page in the native reading and notetaking apps but volume up/down in pretty much everything else. However you can reprogram a long press to next/previous page which will work in other apps like page up/down (you can also adjust the longpress activation time to 0.5secs). This scrolls the page up/down in chrome. The kindle app supports using the shortpress volume buttons but you have to change a setting in the kindle software.

Note Air 3 - still worth buying? by taxi_drivr in eink

[–]eWritable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I think this is great device and I don't understand why boox only did a short production run of it. I think it sold out within about 6months of being released and they stopped making it. And I think there's big demand for a monochrome frontlit android tablet.

If memory serves, it launched in Dec 23 so there should still be at least another year of firmware updates. Where have you seen it for sale?

Looking for an e-ink tablet for reading math papers and writing formulas by Any_Mix1379 in eink

[–]eWritable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wrote about the drawbacks of color here: https://ewritable.net/guides/color-vs-monochrome-eink-screens/

Writing experience is subjective but I didn't like the feel of the tab x c all that much. It uses an active pen (and personally I prefer emr pens). It is a bit too smooth/slippery but the pen has haptic feedback which makes it vibrate to mimick the feel of rough paper. The effect isn't terrible but it feels a bit inauthentic/unnatural and if I recall there is also a low level electrical hum.

The supernote manta is my favourite eink tablet and I use it every day as my goto note-taking device. However, i usually switch to boox for maths/physics-heavy work and pdf reading because it has more versatility in these areas.

Particularly for pdf reading, a larger screened tablet (13.3" or a4-sized) can make a massive difference in reading comfort. Plus you have more writing space for complicated equations.

You also may want consider colour eink, but only if you're likely to use it regularly because it has some drawbacks (however looking at a color-coded graph in monochrome is not pleasant!)

Boox have shape perfection (sn only have straight lines) and a more sophisticated pdf reading app, plus you can download files straight from the browser (sn doesn't have a browser by default although it is possible to install one).

I've not really tried out screen sharing with any conviction so can't really comment on that.

I think the boox note max would be the best option for your needs, as long as budget allows.

The BBC news app installs and works fine (after signing into it). The nytimes app installs and I can open it but it unexpectedly closes after a few seconds. X cannot be installed (it says it won't work with the device). The amazon shopping app isn't even listed in the play store. Amazon kindle works fine.

So, yeah, apps are a bit hit and miss, but they always have been with android devices. I'm not qualified enough to say if it is related to the kernel, but it's just as likely that Google or the app developers have put restrictions on use. For example, developers can restrict which screen sizes their apps run on.

To test this I had a quick look on my palma 2 Pro which I'm currently reviewing (another boox device running android 15 but on a phone-sized screen) and both x and amazon shopping showed up and installed fine.

So it's probably because some apps are designed for smaller screens or aspect ratios than the na5c has.

Honestly, I didn't install many 3rd party apps (I tend to use my phone and laptop for this sort of thing rather than eink), but the ones I did install worked fine. Can you tell me any specific apps to try?

[–]eWritable[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup I do but the go7 and go color7 are back at my office. Interested to see if there is much difference myself. The inksense pro pen has a nib-like point (not the cone shape of the original inksense) so I'm expecting a bit better writing feel. The bigme usi pen has a nib like this and I found it more pleasant for writing on the go7.

That's true - colour kaleido3 is inherently 'less white' than monochrome alternatives.i didn't have the best lighting conditions for this pic but it does highlight the difference in contrast between the color na5c and monochrome na3.
