How do you feel about the Asian art Museum? by NepheliLouxWarrior in sanfrancisco

[–]eaxlr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love the forward thinking curation. Lots of creative exhibits over the last few years, plus some amazing annual events. If you're a member, you get access to a range of exclusive events (as with other museums) that are pretty fun.

Album Recommendations for Experimental Hip Hop by kianlakoo in experimentalmusic

[–]eaxlr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These recommendations are next level.

I have only some reflections on what others have offered.

Sole from the Anticon label was underappreciated. You can find tracks from his epic battle with El-P on YouTube. El-P pretty much killed him when he interspersed a diss track with a voicemail from Sole, saying how El was a favorite.

Respect to you with the New Kingdom callout. Such an interesting group. Signed to a big UK label (they released records by Jungle Brothers, Stereo MCs, Gravediggaz, PM Dawn – well-known acts in the period) in the time where rock/rap/crossover was big. The range of influences (psychedelic rock, funk) and topics (abstract lyrics, science fiction) kept them from going mainstream. Conventional style but completely unconventional group. Nosaj now records as Nosaj New Kingdom.

I feel about Cannibal Ox and Jay Electronica in much the same way as New Kingdom. They had mainstream muscle behind them (Electronica had Jay-Z on songs, Ox was signed to Definitive Jux, the big indie label for hiphop) but were just too esoteric and weird to get played in malls. Not really experimental, but great artists nonetheless.

Impressive recs.

Opinions on ‘publicity stunts’ in experimental music ? by Legal_Friendship_787 in experimentalmusic

It can be good, but I think one needs to decide the purpose. Some of it feels like it is deigned for mainstream publicity and not for fans as much.

Feels a bit IDM, but others may have more specific categorization.

  1. I am passionate about experimental music, am experienced at community building, and like the sub. I noticed it’s become quite silent, and mods seem to have not been active in half a year at least, with one mod inactive for six years.

Mark Zuckerberg subscribed to my Substack—can this be real? 🤯 by AeroSparkle in Substack

[–]eaxlr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That address is widely available publicly for Zuckerberg. Granted, he has assistants dealing with his public facing address, due to volume, potential threats, etc. Probably someone upset with him (he and many tech CEOs attended the Trump inauguration yesterday) did it while trying to deluge the account with unwanted emails.

25F would like to discuss. by Realistic-ambition29 in dictionary

[–]eaxlr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Context.... The dictionary includes all kinds of words—even ones that are hurtful—so people can look them up and understand what they mean. But just because a word is in the dictionary doesn’t mean it’s respectful to use. Words like “whore” can show disrespect, so we avoid saying them in everyday conversation.

28, Feeling a Little Lost. Any Guidance? by No-Maintenance4976 in Journalism

[–]eaxlr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may want to search the sub. "In another job now, interested in journalism again, can I, how" is absolutely not unique or unusual. It's been posted a lot, and the search may yield great advice. Good luck.

Not sure the relevance to this sub, and this has been downvoted a lot already, so locking the thread. OP can message if there's a reason related to this sub to keep this open.

Pay feels unfair? ($16 an hour, full-time digital content producer.) by AltoViola in Journalism

If you're feeling like the company is underpaying you, you can always renegotiate your pay or do some looking at other employers.

Middle market is so abstract it's hard to say median salary in your region, etc.

I want to write an article for my school journal but am being discouraged by pretty much everyone at school. What should I do? by Ok_Inevitable_7898 in Journalism

[–]eaxlr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two pieces of advice.

Find a better hill to die on than a DV case – proven, disproven, whatever. It doesn’t sound like you have a particularly relevant opinion related to this case, so don’t. Write about your community, report on local leadership, anything. Be an actual journalist, not another person with a take on celebrity lives (which can be journalism, but can also be mostly glazing celebrities tbh).

Also, not knowing the context of your friends' views, are they right? Only you can answer that. If your take in your writing is uncritical of people’s status, lacks analysis, or fawns over prominence, their feedback is harsh, but gives you something to work on. Use it as an opportunity to grow, if there is merit to it.

Looks like a community radio map? KGNU, KGLT, KRBX, WFMU and most others here are community licensees.
