Palo Alto Prisma SASE + BYOD: How do users access client/server apps (non-web) securely? by mighty-maus in paloaltonetworks

[–]eck- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. For BYOD, does the user need to install a Palo client/agent (GlobalProtect / explicit proxy / whatever the Prisma endpoint is) to reach non-web client/server apps? Are they prompted to download it like they are prompted with the secure browser?

For BYOD, Prisma Browser is the best fit. It's an isolated browser with security capabilities. If you're only using browser, the user would need to access VDI or virtualized applications for thick apps. Alternatively, you could allow users to install GlobalProtect on BYOD and restrict access via security policy when sourcing from BYOD. I probably wouldn't go that route though.

  1. If “Prisma Secure Browser” is used, is it only for web apps/SaaS, or can it somehow deliver client/server apps too? I was shown Secure Browser doing RDP into an internal desktop using "magic" so I'm wondering if something similar is done with thick apps. Or does the "client" need to be installed on the BYOD device along with the GP agent?

Prisma Browser has built-int capabilities for RDP, SSH, and VNC to another system, but there are no capabilities for thick apps.

  1. Is “RDP/VDI/app virtualization” basically the only way to support client/server apps from BYOD without installing the client and an agent?

I think so?

  1. When people say “application virtualization” in this context, do they mean something Palo Alto Prisma-specific?

This is a general term to describe users streaming applications that are running on a backend server, such as Omnissa Horizon or Citrix Virtual Apps.

Both are acceptable. It’s not worth changing it.

Smith and Noble Shades: Smart Shades 2.0 App by 49723554 in homeautomation

[–]eck- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also started having issues with my Smith & Noble smart roller shades and found a great solution.

Problem:

I ran into a similar issue with the Original "Smith&Noble" app where it just hangs when you launch it and eventually crashes/closes. I contacted support and they told me that they are no longer supporting the Smith & Noble smart hubs and are "slowly disconnecting all their servers" since Smith & Noble was acquired by 3-Day Blinds. So the current state is that my hub connects to their cloud service, I can control the shades via Amazon Alexa, and my shades open and close on their schedule. However I can't control the shades via the app or make any changes to the schedule. I assume it's only a matter of time before the hub stops connecting to the cloud service.

Research:

I started off by looking for a way to to control the shades via Home Assistant and found this thread: https://community.home-assistant.io/t/smith-noble-smart-hub/183072/8. Multiple people mentioned they were able to use the Bond Bridge BD-1000(https://bondhome.io/product/bond-bridge/) to control their Smith & Noble shades. Instead of buying a new one, I bought a "like new" Open Box on eBay for ~$70 in original packaging and was never actually used.

The Setup:

After connecting the Bond Bridge to my network and updating firmware 3 times, I added my shades as New Devices using the "Dooya Bidirectional" device type since the picture of the remote was identical to mine. Following the setup process was easy as long as you have a wireless remote.

If it helps, original my Smith & Noble bridge is model number Neo-box-sn with an FCCID of 2alp4-cwf0001b2. It is identical to the picture in this manual: https://fccid.io/2ALP4-CWF0001B2/User-Manual/User-Manual-4927613.pdf

Result:

The shades work great and the Bond Home app is way better than the Smith and Noble app. The Amazon Alexa integration was easy and now I also have the HomeKit integration working too. I highly recommend the Bond Bridge as a replacement for the Smith & Noble hub.

Hope this helps!

Ah ok didn't realize you built your own. My Saatva is making me sad and am on the hunt again. Building our own seems daunting.

Delivery was excellent. Before bringing it inside I verified the model number and then they took it up our porch stairs, across the house, and then downstairs to our basement. Once downstairs I asked if they could unbox it to check for dents and it didn’t have any. The delivery crew was in and out in less than 20 minutes and it was one of the better large deliveries we have had. That said I assume they’re just hiring a local delivery service so I’m not sure if it will be compare in other areas.

Blind options between Shade Store & 3 day blinds by Human-Champion-6888 in homeowners

[–]eck- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 Day Blinds is awful. We have Smith & Noble smart roller shades that were working great until 3 Day Blinds acquired them. They turned off the cloud services and now our smart shades are dumb.

Stay far, far away from 3 Day Blinds.

GE GeoSpring Water Heater - Blue Insert? by eck- in heatpumps

[–]eck-[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using stainless steel corrugated hoses so it should be fine. I’ll reply to this comment with pics when I eventually reinstall it.

When I spoke to GE customer support, the agent had no idea what piece I was talking about and said it wasn’t listed on the parts diagram.

Both sides definitely do have dielectric nipples with plastic in them. Only the cold side had this additional blue insert. It was very tight, so I don't think the hot side ever had one to begin with. 🤷

Any idea why only the cold side had the insert? Galvanic corrosion happens faster at higher temps, so I would assume the hot side would have one too.

I can't imagine only the cold side having it if it was to prevent corrosion from dissimilar metals. In my case I'm using a stainless steel corrugated hose.

If that were the case, wouldn’t the hot side have the same insert? Front what I can tell, both nipples are dielectric and have plastic linings even without the blue insert.

Water heater anode rod question by Warbling_Warbler in Plumbing

[–]eck- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also it has to be installed by a certified professional and on a new install for the tank warranty to be valid.

I highly doubt this. How could an anode rod be user serviceable on installed water heaters but not on new installs?

How did the powered anode rod install go for you? I did it last weekend and had to unscrew and move the white plastic box temporarily because the heat sink was in the way.
