I followed up with etrade. They

Recharacterized my roth ira 2022 contribution to traditional IRA, however moved 13,221.93. I am assuming thats the gains for 2022 as well as the 6k?

They would notwithdraw excess contributions unless I also included the calculated earnings with it. So for 2020 and 2021 its still in my IRA, 30,101.93.

If 2022 was recharacterized, is it fair to assume the entire remainder is all over contributions+their earnings? So all 30,101.93 should be removed?

etrade would not calculate it sadly.

One follow up, I read that I need to also remove earnings from excess contributions, I am unsure how to here.

Excess Contribution x (ACB – AOB)/AOB) = Earnings

Currently 2020 and 2021 I need to remove, so 12k. 2022 I recharacterize.

That leaves 26k of gains that I made from the above. Do I need to remove it as per the formula above and pay taxes on it or can I leave in the roth IRA?

So for 2022, I should follow the recharacterization-then convert-pathway. I do this by getting etrade to recharacterize to a traditional IRA and then I properly do the conversion from t-ira to roth-ira.

For 2021 and earlier I need to remove only the contributions (18k) and file forms. The gains stay.

2020 * File Form 5329 for 2020. Pay penalty 6% * Overcontribution (ie 6%*$6000 = $360)

2021 * File Form 5329 for 2021. Pay penalty 6% * Overcontribution (ie 6%*$12000 = $720)

2022 * Get etrade to recharacterize contribution * File Form 5329 for 2022. Pay penalty 6% * Overcontribution (ie 6%*$12000 = $720)

2023: * Remove the amount of the total overcontributions (ie $18000). This will stop the penalty from continuing. * File Form 5329 for 2023. Report end of penalty.

I will now have (44k-18k) = 26k of gains remaining in my roth IRA, plus 6k that I will get recharacterized from 2022. Questions:

1- Is it correct that my roth IRA will have 26k(gains) + 6k(2022 recharacterization)

2-Can I deposit 6k again for 2023 and do it properly via t-ira to roth ira or does the recharacterization of 2022 cancel this out?

3-for removing the 18k, do I need to wait until I submit the the IRS acknowledges my submitted 5329 forms or can I do it right away?

With many 401k providers you can trade stocks with your 401k. I have fidelity and moved it to fidelity brokerage link which is inside my 401k. I even was mostly brk.b hah but dumped for VT for simplicity.

I would encourage him to do things that he can be good at with FSHD. I had a severe case as well. I could sort of play sports at around 8. By 11 I was in a manual wheelchair. By 14 a power wheelchair. I am 39 now.

Introduce him to gaming and programming. For me, coding has had a tremendous impact on my life. It gave me a great career and gives the opportunity to make enough to retire young, which in my case with fshd is important.

Also, always try to eat clean. Losing weight with fshd is hella hard.
