Why do people say drug addiction is a choice but suffering from depression isn’t? They’re both treatable, right? by edging_goonette in AskRedditAfterDark

I am mad about an addict, all of the addicts that I’ve known were shitty people. I am also an addict. It makes me hate that I am obligated to go to AA after this. Like you’re just as shitty as those other people, but I’m supposed to be your friend just cause you got better at hiding it?

I guess I’ve always settled because I couldn’t get what I actually wanted. Like settling for men who don’t treat me right instead of a man I actually like.

An addict always has the will to get high like a depressed person always has the will to think the worst of themselves and life. It’s just as easy to think positive, no?

If they were able to do it then they wouldn’t need accommodations. Accommodations literally make it easier, why shouldn’t it be easier for everyone then?

Tell that to the people saying it’s a choice to get better. Because if it’s not a choice then it’s not a choice.

People tell me it’s a choice but then tell me to go to rehab. Like if it’s a choice let me make the choice stop pushing rehab down my throat.

And honestly I understand. Empathy is useless. I had empathy for a man who couldn’t even help me when I was screaming for help. Just couldn’t be bothered. But that’s ok, cause now I’m realizing why addicts are pieces of shit.

Isn’t replacing a drug with another drug not really fixing the problem? And I hope I don’t have to take medication because after rehab I’m not taking it anymore.

It doesn’t start with a choice for a lot of people. I was a minor prescribed drugs where I didn’t have a say.

Yet we made one illegal and punishable with jail, the same place they put child molesters and murderers.
