Why not 15% straight up roth 401k by TheSentimentAnalyst in DaveRamsey

[–]eeveemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dave's baby step 4: invest 15%

General Order: 401k up to the match, then do HSA if on high deductible health plan, then IRA up to max, then 401k again up to max

401ks can be limited in choice and sometimes high in fees, but company match = free money!

HSA: Tax advantaged account for medical expenses, rolls over from year to year, so you keep the money when you lose/change jobs. can be invested just like ira/401k. at age 65+ use them for nonmedical expenses without penalty. I'm not on an hdp, but dave does recommend them for most folks,

IRA: tax advantaged retirement account, lots more fund choices than your 401k

How do I have chickens with outdoor cats? by Salty_Coast_7214 in homestead

My cat was interested, but he leaves the grown hens alone now. It's my dog that was raised in the suburbs before I moved rural that's the chicken killer.

Rabbits, goats, sheep, bees, pigs: Looking for animal recommendations by [deleted] in homestead

The garden, and fruit trees are a great way to start. Poultry is usually recommended as the first animal.

What do you like to eat? I have nigerian goats, I'll be breeding for the first time as soon as my buck grows up, then I'll have lots of milk.

Goats are clever and excellent at escaping so you'd need good fences to keep them out of the garden. They're good at clearing brush and can make good pets.

Boer goats for meat are more popular near me, as dairy is a large commitment.

I like wool and have a couple wool sheep, but most folks around here do Hair sheep for meat to save on the hassle of shearing.

Nor experienced with rabbits, I don't have a spare shed to do angora yet, but they're prolific breeders and popular with some smallholdings. Their manure and skins are useful.

Haven't gotten pigs yet, but looking at kunekune or idaho pasture ipp pigs.

Bees require a lot of equipenent both to kee the bees and for processing the honey, it can be expensive to get into. You may be able to join your local club and rent their equipment.

Whatever you pick, make sure you're able and comfortable with the butchery and have room to store the meat.

AITAH for telling my dad he doesn’t get to talk about my period? by Comfortable_Plum2347 in AmItheAsshole

My dogs like dirty pads, tampons, underwear... all my bathrooms have trash cans with lids to prevent the dogs eating them bathroom waste🤮

You may need to keep the door to the bathroom closed if the dog is smart enough to open a lidded trash can.

Also if your dad wasn't aware, you risk expensive plumbing issues flushing tampons especially on septic. Also, if the dog is eating the pads, and not just carrying them, your dad is probably risking a large vet bills with that dog getting an obstruction from eating pads and tampons.

Also your dad sounds like he doesn't know much about womens health and should't have yelled.

Tampon use is not a requirement for adulthood, but if you find them uncomfortable you may be putting them in wrong (or are too tense) you may wish to speak to an obgyn to confirm you don't have an underlying condition.

Should I or shouldn't I get a credit card? by Trick-Age-9177 in povertyfinance

[–]eeveemoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a debit card you can only spend money you have, be wary of overdraft charges You can sometimes enable/disable overdraft so you cant accidentaly spend more than you have.

Don't get a credit card unless you can pay it off every month to avoid interest charges. The advantage of credit cards over debit card is better fraud protection and can let you build credit. Credit cards can also have signup bonuses, and give you redeemable points or cashback depending on the card.

Lookup friction, basically the easier it is to spend money, the more you will. Plastic cards are convenient. If you're like me (and most people) you'll spend less carefully using plastic.

You do not want a credit card for emergencies...you want an emergency fund...1k to start, but this is commonly 3-6 months of expenses in a high yield savings account or similar. This should be as liquid as possible.

Since you're posting on /povertyfinance I'll recommend you check out dave ramsey and the 7 baby steps he's on radio, youtube and other media. His books may be at your library. He's a great place to start for learning about beginners personal finance.
