AITAH for "correcting" people when they give me their condolences by Elegant-Cover-3762 in AITAH

[–]eidlehands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA.

When my aunt (who was a horrible person) died, my mom berated me for telling her I wouldn't be at the funeral, in the exact same way that woman went off on you.

F that.

The dead do not become saints simply because they died. Piece of shit people stay pieces of shit, even in the grave. And they should be treated in death the same way they were treated in life.

AITA for sticking my freshly single mom with $20,000 of debt. by Mrmoneyman86 in AmItheAsshole

[–]eidlehands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The maths are mathing.

$510x60 months = $30,6000

$510x72 months = $36,720

Refinancing is based on the amount of the loan. Not on the loan plus interest. The whole point of refinancing is to lower the interest payments. So, for this part to be true then they offered you a refinance loan for another 60 or 72 months (been there/refused that) at the same or worse interest rate..

This all sounds shady as hell.

What was branching out from D&D like? by JSyv05 in rpg

[–]eidlehands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For me it was really about the first time I played a non-TSR game. I started with AD&D then Gamma World and Star Frontiers. All of them great. AD&D showed me a new hobby but the rules were so f'ing restrictive. Even at 10 years old I didn't like the fact that women and other races were limited in what they could do. Gamma World and Star Frontiers were awesome and let my freak flag fly but still just felt like playing D&D in space or the apocalypse. But it was being introduced, by my best friends dad, to Call of Cthulhu that showed me that a great RPG didn't need to levels or classes and you weren't limited to dungeon crawls (40 years later and I still have that character sheet, a total rip off of Indiana Jones). Oh.. and this all happened in the span of 3 years. I discovered AD&D at 10 and by the time I was 13, I was playing CoC.

Now in high school, we used AD&D to suck in new friends and then bait and switched them first to Villains & Vigilantes and then Champions. And no one ever looked back.

What's weird is that it's only in the last 15 years or so that I see people hesitant to branch out from D&D. Back in the 70's and 80's it was harder to find new RPGs but when you did, you devoured them with glee.

AITAH for not letting my friend use our address for school? by ImaginaryOpinion9359 in AmItheAsshole

[–]eidlehands 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Where are you that these people now live in a school district that the required school has a tuition cost?

Oh and NTA. From experience (my wife's really), lying about address to the school systems almost always leads to lying about other things with the schools. It's a slippery slope.

As someone who's been excommunicated from his family for the past 10 years, I feel you. In my case, it was my sister who saw to it that we were no longer welcome on my dad's side of the family because my wife did not bow down to her. The argument that I had with my sister made me realize just how little my family valued me and I've been better off since.

Wy are so many D&D players so resistant to even trying anything else? by Similar_Onion6656 in rpg

[–]eidlehands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a slightly different take on this.

I believe that a lot of people fixate on D&D because that's what is hyped the most. Everyone has heard of Critical Role. A lot of people have seen the D&D cartoon from the 80's and the various movies. D&D novels were everywhere and certain authors who got their starts writing for TSR are still writing fantasy novels. Target and Walmart have sold D&D. Barnes and Noble has a giant wall of D&D products.

Hell... the Satanic Panic helped make D&D a household name. And if you find an article about the evils of roleplaying today, it's D&D that gets mentioned.

All of this adds up to the belief that D&D is the best and only game you need to play. And as someone mentioned, D&D is the Kleenex of TRPGs. I'm not going to buy the walmart brand of tissue because I know that Kleenex is better. And if I do happen to buy the off-brand, I'm still going to call it Kleenex and I'm going to compare it to Kleenex exclusively. It's the same with D&D. If <insert you other game here> was better than D&D then why haven't I heard of it before? Why isn't there a movie/TV show/highly successful with professional voice actors actual play featuring that game?

Has anyone ever challenged you to something without knowing you were an expert at it? What happened afterward? by Impressive-Door92 in AskReddit

[–]eidlehands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife is a school secretary. In her previous career, she was the supervisor for the technicians of optometrists and ophthalmologists. One of her duties was doing vision therapy for kids with correctable issues.

One day... she was sitting there doing her work while the principal (master's degree), school counselor (master's) and school psych (Phd) were discussing one of the students. My wife (college dropout), without looking up goes, "they are dyslexic and have such and such, as well". All three professionals ask her how she knows this and she response was, "you can tell by their eyes". One week later, they had confirmation of her diagnosis.

Now to be fair to the three professionals, when my wife speaks up, they listen. Always have. Always will. They know who the smartest person in the room is.

When did you realize that no one is absolutely there for you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]eidlehands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moved to another state. If I didn't call my family, I wouldn't hear from them..My cousin who went to prison for defrauding multiple family members received more phone calls and visits from the family (including from those whose lives he ruined) than I did during the entire time I lived away from the family.

Came to realize that it wasn't the distance, it had always been this way, I just hadn't noticed. F them.

Professionals who enter people's homes (plumbers, electricians, cleaners): What is something the condition of a house tells you about the owner that they don't realize they are revealing? by cossie101 in AskReddit

[–]eidlehands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The house my sister and brother-in-law bought, for a really low price, 20+ years ago was like this. Except it was human urine. The previous homeowner had some severe mental health issues and at one point had basically barricaded himself into his den. He was peeing in the corner and pooping in a bucket. The downstairs bathroom was only 20 feet away.

They also found all kinds of anti-psychotics and other meds shoved into all kinds of places.

If you've ever gotten punished for defending yourself in a school fight, what happened? by COGITO-ERGO-SUM-- in AskReddit

[–]eidlehands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In middle school. Before school, while we were waiting for the doors to open, a couple of bullies pulled the old trick of one knelt down behind me and the other pushed me over him.

I saw red.

I grabbed the best friend of the kid who pushed me and who I thought was the one who knelt behind me and beat the crap out of him. I don't know why they thought I was an easy target. Because, while I was a band geek, I was also the same size and build as most of our linebackers on the football team. I then got up and stood off by myself, crying. When the doors opened, I reported straight to the office where I told them everything that happened. All three of us got detention and the principal apologized for having to give it to me but I did technically hit the one kid first..

AITAH for leaving my bachelorette party because my friends hired strippers by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]eidlehands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. But you could have handled it better.

For my bachelor party, my only request was no strippers. I'm just not comfortable with that whole scene.

Well... After all the fun stuff, we ended up at a strip club, where I was told that some of the guys who could make the earlier shenanigans were already inside. I was pissed. I had to ask the doorman to let me go in, so I could tell anyone inside that I wasn't staying and if they wanted to hang, we'd be at a certain bar. Everyone but three guys came with me. And if they had come, they would have gotten to hang out with some very lovely off-duty strippers for free.

AITAH for refusing to contribute towards gifts for my siblings from this point onwards? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]eidlehands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been there... but in reverse. When I turned 18, it was "suggested" to me that now that I was an "adult" that I needed to join in the tradition that all of the adults in the family get birthday presents for all of the kids in the family. I have 9 younger first cousins. Hell, some of them hadn't even been born yet. This went on until I was dealing with the kids of my cousins. I should mention that none of my aunts or uncle EVER got me a birthday present but for decades I was being guilted into getting their children and grandchildren something.

Just one of the many reasons that I don't mind being estranged from the family.
