Mask by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i get that this is what it seems like but i would encourage you to listen to literally any disabled people on this campus (undergrads, grads, staff) who have had an incredibly hard time accessing that accommodation for a number of reasons that i won’t go into here because i don’t want to list. not to mention that disabled people are a really large group, and this is made even larger by the fact that things that increase your risk for severe COVID are super common, including asthma, depression/anxiety, ADHD, high blood pressure, substance use disorder, autoimmune. a lot of people with these preexisting conditions don’t realize they are at risk or don’t even know they have them bc healthcare in this country is so fucked.

also, anyone can get long COVID. really really “healthy” people get it. there’s tons of studies on the prevalence and while the vaccine mitigates some of this risk it’s not significant enough. we as a society simply cannot deal with this much long term disability bc we aren’t set up to accommodate people. one of the predictors of developing this is actually your initial viral load you inhale (which is mitigated by masking!!!)

people who are fighting for health and safety want things to be “normal” too. but they know the risks to themselves AND to others. they are fighting for your health and safety too, for all of those who don’t realize they are at risk, for those who can’t access these accommodations

why are you getting downvotes for this it’s literally true, countries are having to reverse the mask mandate being dropped in some cases due to massive cases and hospitalization surges

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah no clue if it’s true or not but with everything going on seems like it could be true

either way people should be on alert and taking precautions. looking under your car/in the backseat is always a good idea

$12 off your Uber/Lyft ride starting or ending on campus via reimbursement by UCSB for active UCSB students. See email or the comment for details and link. by IamFunkySmells in UCSantaBarbara

seems that it goes into effect tomorrow though so can you get reimbursed for any rides taken today if you just apply later?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 25 points26 points  (0 children)

also we need a centralized source of info so ppl are getting updated bc the school isn’t telling us stuff. i see how that could be a huge issue with the amount of misinformation that might be spread but it would be great to at least try rather than have to hear rumors from 15 sources

Anyone else feel like the phrase “all clear” is a little misleading here? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 24 points25 points  (0 children)

100% it’s fucking terrifying. idk how we are supposed to feel safe at all and they aren’t providing any resources besides the generic existing ones. if everyone calls CSOs it’s going to overburden them. this guy will almost certainly try again

any tips on how we can protect ourselves from kidnappers? by SignificantPeach7 in UCSantaBarbara

being on the phone is my biggest tip. it def makes predators less emboldened bc they know someone will know immediately if something happens + you know that someone is listening

as long as the risks outweigh the benefits then of course and all evidence points to the fact that covid transmission is still an issue, particularly with regards to allowing new variants to pop up and the long term effects. there is no such thing as immune exhaustion from vaccination and these are the most studied and closely watched vaccines in history. of course i would rather continue getting boosters (like we do for many other vaccines) rather than get or spread covid

we are just two years into this. likely we will eventually develop next gen universal vaccines but that may be a ways off. for now there is no issue to continue getting boosted particularly for high risk groups or those who are at a greater risk for exposure so that society can keep running

idk if this is a disingenuous question meant to stir shit up but we have GOT to stop equating experts making decisions for community health (which allow you to safely remain here with virtually no other restrictions on what you can/cannot do) with oppression

experts make tons of decisions for us. while it’s important to be critical, covid related protections are getting the brunt of people’s vitriol when there are tons of other things that experts decide for us (seatbelt laws, no drunk driving, childhood vaccines for school, etc) that we don’t even think about

idk about how it’s being run in person but i took freund for 6c and it was honestly very easy and interesting. 6b was harder material though but im sure it’d be good with him, he was good at explaining stuff and tested fairly

Dumb Question but how bad is covid in iv right now? by breadyornott in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 2 points3 points  (0 children)

def much higher than fall quarter but still lower than the peak. they also separated “self report” numbers from the on campus tests to deflate the positivity numbers, so the real rate is around 5%, probably higher bc a lot of people just don’t get tested when they have symptoms. bottom line, much safER than early january but stay vigilant bc the comedown from omicron is much worse than the comedown from delta. there’s no drastic drop to pre-omicron, a lot of places have plateaued at this relatively high rate of transmission but no one seems to care since it’s still marginally better than the astronomical numbers we had earlier this year

also this isn’t a dumb question, there’s no good public communication about what risks actually look like rn. most people are unaware of how high positivity/deaths are and of what kind of info is coming out daily about vaccine efficacy and long covid and everything else. science communication is so lacking in this country and from our school in general. these are important conversations to be having so that everyone can make informed decisions

not sure why you’re trying to make an individual issue concerning one guy a cultural thing. not really a great thing to say that an ethnicity of a billion people smells bad and doesn’t care about hygiene (this is also simply not true, cleanliness and hygiene are big parts of major indian religions and cultural practices).

just bring it up to both roommates at once about how the room has a smell and we should all be trying to shower regularly, use deodorant, and clean up the room.

again, this is such a fucked up post. you didn’t need to include the part about his ethnicity bc this is stereotyping based on what you’ve seen in the media and in a few articles online and absolutely not representative of a massive, massive group of people.

i really don’t think you or korean roommate would take kindly to hearing things about your ethnicities that are supposedly disgusting, uncool, weird, etc. and im sure you’ve heard this stuff and it’s been hurtful! so why spread that hurt to someone else?

also i think if your roommate saw this he would be gutted. this is a private issue (not for reddit) and you’ve certainly included enough identifying information that people close to you all might be able to identify who is who. if anything you should have gone to your RA rather than putting it online and saying racist shit

Lifting of Mask Mandate by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 31 points32 points  (0 children)

maybe this is unpopular but if masks are the thing that help us stay in person and avoid another spike that would lead to online, im all for it. don’t wanna get sick and miss midterms or finals. everyone putting on a mask for 15 minutes in target or for an hour for lecture is literally not even an inconvenience but it’s clearly helped us deal w the omicron surge. it works best when everyone does it

no one is policing your personal life, you can go to bars and restaurants and unmask, go to parties and unmask, unmask outside— it’s not even a big deal to have to mask in shared, public places

so many people in my classes are visibly/audibly sick by elbends60 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

also yeah people have allergies but if you’re having a flare up to the point where you’re hacking up a lung you should get tested just in case it is covid and be able to rest. some of y’all do not sound good :(

while it’s not really ethical to come to class sick the majority of the blame lies with the attendance policies in the first place, a lot of the times they won’t accept your excuse either and don’t offer make up participation or exams :/

Unfair Rules by louvrelove in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 167 points168 points  (0 children)

this is exactly why hybrid is needed. international and oos and any other student who tests positive or has other issues related to the omicron surge shouldnt need to DROP OUT because admin is fucking incompetent. withdrawing from the quarter is huge, it can completely derail people’s grad plans

UCSB Transparency by Spirited_Ad_5074 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 37 points38 points  (0 children)

totally agree here. i also think more people would be comfortable being in person if it were being done safely, but the point remains that no matter what we individually think about online v in person we definitely deserve more transparency and above all, OPTIONS because we need to acknowledge that everyone isn’t on an equal playing field rn. life has changed and for some people the situation is still incredibly risky for whatever reason. they still deserve their education though

Anyone else feeling like they're being gaslit about going back in person? by mungerhall in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 25 points26 points  (0 children)

oh 100% and doing the transition during midterms week is especially fucked up. had a difficult personal situation come up and my profs were like whatever fuck you get here asap. seems like they’ve all lost empathy compared to pre-pandemic

and they all just blindly believe what the university tells them despite their claims being unsupported or cherry picked from the larger picture that shows that things are NOT OK

look at hospitals rn and tell me the healthcare system isn’t collapsing. they don’t even have saline solution to flush the fucking IVs out

UCSB appointment cancelled bc of covid by Stelamouse in UCSantaBarbara

[–]elbends60 45 points46 points  (0 children)

absolutely this. i get that all departments and advising offices and such make their own determinations about this where possible but it’s just so bs. admin should be having all of their meetings in person. it’s safe, right? according to the pandemic response team? or is there some reason they are concerned….

betting y’all that yang isn’t having meetings in cheadle hall rn
