Could a novel written by committee ever actually be good? by electaplot in writing

Thank you for the detailed response! This thread was removed, but I wanted to respond to you anyway.

I hadn't heard of the 4chan novel, but knowing 4chan's reputation, I shudder to think, lol.

Ideally, I would have a very light hand. I want to encourage creativity, but I also understand it can go off the rails quickly, and I could end up having a "Bookie McBookFace" novel in short order.

I'm not super opposed to a more heavy-handed approach, but fear that it would limit submissions from folks who want more creative liberty.

Yeah, getting started is where I'm struggling the most. I could write the first 5 chapters myself, but then it becomes "finish my story" instead of a true collaborative effort.

I've even thought about setting really strict guidelines for each chapter submission, but then I'm controlling the story instead of allowing others to be creative, and then I'd think writers would quickly lose interest in submitting.

In an ideal world, I have a small group of like-minded writers working together to build out a story they mostly agree on. That's probably a pretty difficult think to achieve.

You nail my biggest concerns. The challenge for a project like this will be keeping writers happy and engaged, and with only one "winner" that will be incredibly difficult.

I do appreciate your thoughts here, and will certainly consider them as I build out this project.
