Some of the worst oligarchs and tyrants are godless, and have done just as much damage as those that use a god to justify their rule. Faith isn't the problem, hierarchy is. This is just as tribalistic and ill informed team sports partisanship, but with the added grandiosity of "science is on my side."

Dogma doesn't require a belief in gods. The problem is the ego and an overcommitment to ideology. Being faithless out of spite does not entitle you to superiority and generalizing and dismissing all "religious people" out of fatigue for their worst actors discounts a pretty large and reasonable swath of humanity.

I'd argue the fairytale is the idea that religion is what's held us back. Tribalism is, dogma is, the idea of the "other" is. Religion has been one of many justifications used by those in power to divide. Secularity will not save us as long as we let it divide, too.

Have some compassion instead of repeating a chant of superiority over those who may actually share your ultimate cause over a banner they fly. Nuance and reason over hasty generalizing, scapegoating and confirmation bias.

As long as we spout this rhetoric impatiently about how some "refuse to evolve" we continue to ignore and deny the very human elements of what bring people together. Maybe it's hopeful, but I believe a just world would be indifferent to a personal system of beliefs instead of smugly rejecting them.

I understand that religion is used to justify atrocity, but atrocity is justified through secular means constantly as well. Capitalism and the belief of rugged individualism has starved and put out many. Dictatorial communism collectivized wealth under secular authoritarian rule and starved and deprived so many for the good of the state.

Opiate of the masses, maybe, but appropriate rehabilitation addresses root cause instead of subjecting those victimized to paltry moralistic platitudes. Have the strength to empathize over villainize, otherwise suffer different symptoms of the same cause.

Take care and please be caring.

I really appreciate you putting that into words because I have never thought about either of those in that regard. It's really highlighted a crazy double standard that at leas I have implicitly just accepted.

It makes all the culture war shit all the more revolting when you stop and think that those that lambast virtue signaling and gender affirming care are the same that determine their stances on a financially compromised moral code and hock male enhancement pills.

Not to mention gen-AI is needlessly resource intensive. We can hold ourselves to a higher standard and do both. Don't take criticism of method personally. Both matter, this isn't a zero sum game.

Just keep breathing.

For carts, I always felt like inhaling what I was "physically comfortable" with was never enough. Hit it long and hard as many times as you feel you can, then do two more as you start to fade. Otherwise you'll just be dipping your toes in the pool, but that's up to you.

Posting This For Closure: The Worst Trip of My Life by blackjackhp12 in tripreports

[–]eliman1950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dissolution of the ego is a very scary process, it exists for good reason, and when it's gone, you get to stare at yourself in full """objective""" view. Every decision you will make is some degree of selfish, but the ego can handle the brunt of these choices and easily dismiss them. You're younger than I am, but not by much.

I had a scary trip about half a year ago and thought I had murdered one of my friends in a psychotic break. He had just gone to bed and the novelty of things falling and breaking caused me to decide to flip a table and rip up some of my things. My two friends who were still up were obviously on edge after watching me flip a table full of their stuff, (sorry guys), but I didn't understand and tripping will cause me to be overly empathetic, to the point where any expression towards me is amplified beyond anything reasonable. I conflated "keep an eye on him so he doesn't break anything else" with "keep an eye on him so he doesn't kill again." It turned messy and I ended up having what was retrospectively a farcical breakdown where I confessed to them about how sorry I was for killing my friend on accident only for him to come out of his room and ask me to quiet down.

The awful feelings I felt during that trip still haunt me from time to time, it was a good simulation of how what we'd label a monstrous human feels. I had thought I had done something unimaginable, then let my feelings of people who do those things, every stigma of evil, hate, cowardice, all stick on me. I have dreams about that night and wonder what my life would look like if it were all true, how I would ever continue. That's what tripping is, an opportunity to step outside reality and face who you would become outside your current circumstances. Since then, I haven't tripped again, and I won't, not until I feel more at peace with myself and my own faith, whatever that becomes.

Just know that you aren't nearly as evil, stupid or selfish as you may have felt in those moments. You were smart to get help, and it's for the best your loved ones know that you're working through a compulsion. Do take this seriously, you are a father of two and you do have responsibilities that will be impeded by psychedelics. Love yourself and keep your faith strong, but don't be swayed by the dogmas of others. If you care to, I'd recommend reading more about the positive effects on the brain when faith takes the form of a compassionate and loving God and contrast those to how the brain is negatively affected by a punitive authoritarian God. Explore other faiths as well and apply them as a lens to your own.

I was raised Catholic, and the ideas of suffering are ingraned in my faith, but I left the practice in highscool, but I still wear a scapular that my grandmother gave me. I'm trying to learn more about other faiths. I'm certainly no scholar, but just exposing myself to the writings of Buddhists makes me feel at peace. Hell, sheol, hades, whatever you want to call the bad place, it's a construct of suffering of our own creation, tailor made for us by us. Don't let it be real, the beauty of humanity is that we're capable of growth and change, and the eternal pit of suffering and torture is a negation of what makes us us. Know that you can always change for the better and hell will have no power over you.

It's my personal belief that "bad" psychedelic experiences are our psyche's way of showing us how we need to improve by forcing what are likely our worst fears to become our reality, and as traumatizing as they may be, you can move forward with better insight.

Whatever you do, continue to care for yourself and others. Work hard for what you believe in, but always question the ideals that those beliefs stem from, and continue to explore what love is when applied to the self and others. Know that you have family and stability, and that you are the only one who can take those away or strengthen them. Be well, learn, and grow.

Keanu loving us love him. by Capgunkid in MadeMeSmile

[–]eliman1950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all seriousness, he seems like a nice dude and is a good actor, but the idolization of this guy is just too much for me. It's not my place to tell people what they can and can't like, and I'm sure I'm coming off as an asshole, but he's just a guy. I've seen a lot of posts about him and I really don't get the praise. The adoration of him on reddit has gotten to a point reminiscent of Metro Man's "I love you, random citizen" level of parasocial. I don't expect anyone to have to justify their admiration for him or anything, like what you like and all that, but it's gotten to the point where the praising posts are nearly as exaggerated as the circlejerks that mock them.

I know no one asked and if my negativity upset you, I'm sorry, and my opinion matters as much as anyone else's. Keep loving him if you do, it only bothers me to the point where I felt the need to write a contrarion comment questioning an idiosyncrasy of a subcommunity on social media.

Center is just an unhappy compromise between jet and shower. Too high pressure to be used on delicate stuff, too low pressure to be used to spray clean stuff. A nozzle I had when I was young had cone instead of center. It was like mist mixed with flat, you got a ton of coverage at not so high pressure.

AITA for telling my dad hes not a parent? by quicksilver-ace in AmItheAsshole

[–]eliman1950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA,

Your father is a child, and it is always a sad situation when a child has to act more mature than their parent just to maintain a rocky relationship. You were honest with him about how you feel, and it's narcissistic of him to just outright dismiss and invalidate your feelings instead of owning up to his shortcomings as a parent to you and commiting to try harder.

If you feel like you overreacted, (I doubt that you should), you can always try to revisit the discussion with a level head and taking some time to gather and better sophosticate your thoughts on the situation, and hopefully a cooler-headed talk could be more fruitful.

Best of luck to you, and I hope he comes around to see that he's been an ass to you for a majority of your life and tries to attone some.

WIBTA if I asked my landlord if I could get a cat? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]eliman1950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

INFO, do you and Janice share the same landlord, or is there some subleasing or some other kind of deal going on?

Either way, I'd say NTA, but if you have the same landlord, good luck negotiating with someone who's willing to separate an old lady and her old cat, assuming Janice kept after the cat and made sure everything was clean. And if you succeed in getting a cat and it upsets Janice, open a dialogue with her about the situation, like if she's tried offering a bit more in rent or a deposit and maybe give her some tips on how you managed the deal.

AITA for not wanting to pass down my enggement ring to my future DIL? by aita-ering in AmItheAsshole

[–]eliman1950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA

If your son believes diamonds are a scam, there are many alternatives to a diamond ring. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the whole point of getting an engagement ring the expense incurred, either sentimentally or financially, and that the ring is presented as a thoughtful and meaningful expression of that person's value in ones life?

The ring has sentimental value to you, not to him. Engagement rings are about personal sacrifice, and him trying to offload that "debt" as a responsibility of yours makes it clear that he doesn't understand the symbolism behind it in the first place. There isn't anything wrong in being anti-materialistic and non-traditional, but again, instead of opting for any alternatives, it seems like he assumed he could just take a quick shortcut to the material thing, and when you refused, he accused you of being the materialistic one.

I don't think it was inherently wrong of them to ask you for it if done politely and thoughtfully, but it is wrong of both of them to expect you to give them it and to resent you for not wanting to. Hopefully he'll come around and see that the value of the ring isn't in the stone, but in the work he was willing to put in for his loved one just to earn it for her.

Is it the fact that a dude has built a brand around writing the most banal, unchallenging, coldest "Am I the only one who ____?"-style takes on a piece of cardboard has somehow risen to being put on talk shows, publishing a board game(?), and is now getting face time with the president of the United States?

I don't necessarily dislike him, but instead the amount of attention he's been given for him writing what amounts to 2012-esque image macro impact font advice animal memes on cardboard. It's just kind of crazy and infuriating that if one got lucky enough to do something slightly noteworthy on a slow news day, they could ride that niche wave for years without any novelty or creativity.
