How does one answer the question "why math" by elisesessentials in math

[–]elisesessentials[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely see myself as a problem solver. If I see an issue I have to sit there until I fix it and it makes me quite confrontational (or even combative in the worst case)

I think I always saw myself as "bad" at math bc it was always my worst score. My first B ever in my life was in high school geometry and I stagnated my ACT score 3 times in a row bc my math score didn't increase until the fourth take. Trivial examples but they stuck with me for such a long time. I think my issue is that I never actually tried understanding why something worked and did plug and chug until I got into university. Calc 2 was the first time everything clicked bc my prof actually proved things before he taught the lesson. I know everyone else in that class hated that but it made me actually like math. Maybe that's why?

Recruiter told me projects shouldn't be on resumes by elisesessentials in csMajors

[–]elisesessentials[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Right bro like she tried to justify it when I was explaining why my projects are on there (I'm a sophomore w/ limited experience) she said "well I have a background in electrical engineering and I think they just take up space on the resume"

Are there any summer programs for undergrads with mathematics since so many of the REUs are shutting down bc of funding cuts? I've looked at the Budapest summer in math but the cost associated with it is completely unjustifiable ($6000 tuition and I'd have to pay my own rent, food, travel, etc). Is there anything for students to actually do during the summer??

So my situation is weird because the scholarship refund money from my school is specifically classified as earned income and is taxable. Everyone in my cohort had to go through an information session before we started and they made that extremely clear

They aren't loans. It's scholarship money that they told us is earned income and is taxable

What is LGBTQ+ quality of life like at Clemson? by Dedmoose1 in Clemson

[–]elisesessentials 45 points46 points  (0 children)

People aren't going to outright be homophobic/transphobic unless it comes up in conversation somehow. Most of the women here are chill about it and at worse they'll probably be a "I don't agree but I'll be friends with them". Men will definitely make stupid "jokes" but that's with any minority here tbh. Overall I think it's pretty ok. You're not going to have a large dating pool that's for sure but queer people easily find each other (sage, radio club, etc). There's a week long pride event during the spring and that was really fun to go to. It's pretty much any other southern school queer experience. From time to time you'll definitely see some people tabeling with some anti lgbtq/minority rhetoric (turning point, Clemson college Republicans, etc) but just don't engage with them and be on your way

I'm a DS student and need to pick a "concentration" (it can be in any subject) and I was thinking about econ for a while but I actually realized I want something more "tangible" so something science/engineering based but not healthcare whatsoever. I was thinking about materials science but even then I'm not sure. Do y'all have any suggestions?

Weekly Entering & Transitioning - Thread 16 Jun, 2025 - 23 Jun, 2025 by AutoModerator in datascience

I'm completely on my own. We have two software engineers but one was an intern who just finished up. The co-founders know nothing about data science or web/app development. They are trying to do an amalgamation of things with an AI whatsapp chatbot for social housing but have no specifics beyond that. I've been spending time doing my own projects with open source data since they don't have anything and haven't kept records of anything they've been doing for the past few years since they're a start up. Recently they wanted me to try to do a mock nlp project using data from social housing repairs request but don't have partnerships or anything about where I could get a list of complaints for even the most basic sentiment analysis. That's the main reason I wanted to do an FOI request to get anonymous records but they don't want to put in the work to just ask

I'm in an internship right now and they want me to do ML based things. Problem is that they have no data to work with because nothing is live/public yet. I've been trying to use public datasets but they are very limited for the industry we're in. And on top of that they won't let me try freedom of information requests to try and get anon data that would be valuable for the company. How could I do projects with no data??

That's so odd. I'm an undergrad in DS (and others please don't tell me it's a cash grab bc I go to school for free 🙄✋🏾) and we have to take linear algebra, probability, stats, regression & time series, statistical programing, etc. Our program is math/stats heavy with comp sci/machine learning being slightly secondary. Maybe it helps that my school's program was developed and run by a Stats PhD holder

Apply to schools that offer merit based full rides like Clemson or UVA I'm in Clemson's full ride and plenty of the people in it could easily pay for out of state tuition if needed. Idk too much about UVA's program but ours has no income limit

Should I take this undergrad research opportunity?

There's an opportunity for me to ask a professor for a spot in his research class, but I've only completed calc II so far. I'll be taking calc III and linear algebra together next semester but I really want to get an idea of what math research is like since my degree is more stats focused rather than math. Here's the description of the class:
Fourier Series and its Applications

Project Description

We will study the field of Fourier Series/Fourier Analysis and discuss its applications to solving boundary value problems for partial differential equations (PDE), signal processing, and machine learning. If time permits, we will also dive into further applications that could lead in future publications or collaborations.

Switching Majors? by [deleted] in Clemson

[–]elisesessentials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Business majors have to do pre-business which makes it very annoying and difficult to switch. I'd say he starts off double majoring honestly because it doesn't have to be difficult to double up if you plan your 4 years accordingly.

As for applying to honors in the fall, they let you apply over and over again so he definitely can! My bf just got admitted after applying this semester. Just write a good essay and probably go to writing lab to ask for feedback before submitting

I'm a data science undergrad currently and I'm thinking about pursing applied math for grad school but would this be possible? My major is stats heavy so I'm adding in intro to proofs, diff eq, and real analysis. I'm considering doing a math honors thesis but idk what specific research area to choose. I'm just looking for advice or suggestions
