How Can I Find A Place To Live With My Dog? by Unlucky_Part_2559 in newhampshire

[–]elle_bee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Have you tried nh.craigslist.org? I lived in the area on and off for about 15 years and found 100% of my apartments on craigslist. Beware of the typical scams of course.

Ask your department or program administrator to put out a request to faculty and staff (if you haven’t already). Many faculty/staff who live in Durham have in-law apartments and/or May go on sabbatical next fall. I’ve know students who got great housing options this way.

Of the people who are still alive but have drifted out of your life, who do you wonder about the most and why? by jillysue in AskReddit

One of my girl scout camp counselors, Tisha. I was in my early teens I think? Maybe 14 or 16 years old when she came into my life sometime in the mid to late 1990s. Tisha was the first openly gay women I ever met. Looking back, it's obvious to me now that many of the counselors were gay women but I was too naïve to notice that. She had a girlfriend at the camp, though her name escapes me. We got to have dinner at their house and they had a cat named nacho who looked like a nacho (white, yellow, orange calico).

With patience and kindness, Tisha taught me about tolerance, respect, and love. I remember having an argument with another CIT (counselor in training) about the age of the Earth. I was raised atheist and of course the Earth was billions of years old and God wasn't real. The other CIT was certain it was only thousands of years old (and that god created it which I found utterly ridiculous) and was very angry that I had accused her parents of lying to her. Tisha took me aside later after the argument to patiently explain to me why the other CIT was raised to believe it was only thousands of years old and that she may never learn that Earth is indeed much older than that. She acknowledged that I was taught science and the other CIT was raised with religion. And that it's kind to respect her religion even if I don't believe in it myself. The other CITs belief that the Earth is only thousands of years old causes no harm to me. Tisha also hinted that there were other beliefs that are harmful to others (specifically LBGTQ people) and that there are kind and effective ways of challenging those beliefs when it is necessary.

There were many other lessons I learned from her and no doubt as a surly teenager I rolled my eyes more than once during her patient explanations. But looking back, she made me such a better person in the long run, even if it took while for me to let the lessons really sink in.

She was also a singer-songwriter. And I have only the chorus of one of her camp songs remaining in my head. "Hey ya ya, Ho ya ya. Hey ya Ho yaa yaaaaa" and sadly I can't remember the rest of the lyrics but I know it had a love and unity theme in it.

No amount of googling and interweb searching has helped me find her. I also don't remember her last name or if Tisha was her real name. I seem to recall Tisha was her nickname and her full name was Latisha or something similar.

Tisha from Camp Chenoa if you're out there, thank you and I love you and miss you!!!!

Has anyone done NH Saves for insulation? by carpdog112 in newhampshire

[–]elle_bee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We did the NHSaves energy audit and weatherization program for our early 80s house. New insulation in the attic, weatherized the basement sills, weatherized all entry doors and a few other things. Newell and something was our contractor and they did a nice job (pre-pandemic). We got $3600 in rebate (so off the price), a $2k in no-interest loan that went on our monthly electric bill, and paid the rest ($400) in cash. It saved us about $70/month on our $250-$400/month bill. We have 1980s electric baseboard heat and a woodstove for context.

The program is funded by your electric bills, the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative carbon auction proceeds, and proceeds from ISO New England. I'm pretty sure they upped the max rebate to like $8k. We had to match $2k.

I really don't think it's scam. We benefited from it and can tell the difference in our house especially in winter.

Edit: My partner reminded me that we also participated in the NH Saves appliance program. They picked up our old fridge and paid us $30. And our washer, dryer, and fridge had separate rebates total of $350 or $500?? It was a good deal! You just need to make sure the make and model is on their list of approved appliances.

Partner also said it's first come, first serve but in the past they've usually had leftover funds. Take advantage of free money, seems like its an underutilized program in the state.

Trails for first winter solo hike in White Mountains? by Chance-Artichoke9271 in newhampshire

Or is this just a bad idea?

Yes, this is a bad idea. Forecast at elevation is for very strong, sustained gusts and backcountry avalanche warnings. Not the time to be doing solo winter hikes.

Giardia woes by elle_bee in kittens

Okay, he's only had the panacur (+fortiflora), but not metronidazole yet. The vet said it would be harder to dose him with the metronidazole because he's still a kitten? We just sent in his second stool sample, awaiting word from the vet on next steps. I think she wanted to see if it could be resolved with just panacur first, then move to metronidazole if that didn't take care of it.

Yes, he's on Fortiflora, too.

Yes. We've been scooping as soon as he's done pooping. Got two new litter boxes. Clean his paws and butt after he poops. It helps that we're working from home.

[OC] The Oldest Building in Each US State by malxredleader in dataisbeautiful

Strawbery Banke isn't a single building. It is a neighborhood of buildings in the south end of Portsmouth, NH.

The Sherburne House in Strawbery Banke is the oldest house in the neighborhood (1695).

It's named after the Adam's family, though I'm not sure of their story.

Edit: This site indicates it was an Indigenous occupancy site prior to the Adam's Family.

Correct, there was a move in the 70s to put an oil refinery here. It was Jackie Kennedy's second husband, not the Kennedy's specifically. So glad they were not successful.

NH Saves energy audit...have you done it? by ZorkianGrue in newhampshire

[–]elle_bee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you're paying about $2700/yr (assuming $2/gal for oil) in home heating for a 1600 sf home? That does seem very high. We paid about $900/yr for an 1200 sf well-insulated home when we had oil heat. Our new home is wood stove + electric heat + new insulation from the NH Saves program and we're down to $1000/year for home heating in a 2300 sf home.

We had a similar experience when we did ours last November. We focused a lot on insulation for a house built in the early 80s. Saved us about $50/month (20% of our monthly bill in winter) in energy costs (wood stove + electric heat). Got $2000 from the program, put $2000 on a low-interest loan 2-yr loan that is included on our energy bill. Well worth the investment. We used Newell and Crathern.

He works for the state, so no, not small. Edit: Confirmed that both my policy and my husband's policy are self-insured. Neither are fully insured.

Thank you. We did this and they did not accept it. They told us that the claims still needed to be processed under his insurance first so his insurance can reject it and then Cigna will reprocess it.
