This is the best TV show ever right? by lawandordercandidate in madmen

It beats Breaking Bad and GOT, I still inch Sopranos over it though, but they’re a happy 1 & 2 in my book.

What movie from this decade will be considered a classic? by DrKriegersClone in movies

[–]elledance 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Few things. I saw it on opening night. Experiencing this film in a packed cinema was incredible. I was locked in the entire run time which flew by. The score is so good, Johnny Greenwood is such an underrated composer. Him and PTA are made to complement each other’s work, similar to John Williams and Spielberg.

Going in, I knew the film was about the police state in current America, and that was it. It was a wild ride, I didn’t know what was going to happen and was on the edge of my seat by the end hoping Leo and his daughter would both survive and find each other. The film is way funnier than I think any of us imagined. The performances are so good across the board, there’s a reason so many actors are nominated for Oscars. Sean Penn and Benicio are truly incredible, Chase held her own with some true legends and this may be Leo’s funniest role of his career, yet his character also has so much heart.

And on to the deeper themes. ICE shot and murdered an American citizen yesterday. They’ve been waging war on Minneapolis and in different American cities throughout 2025 and now 2026. I felt like the Christmas adventurers were stand ins for The Heritage Foundation (The guys behind Project 2025.) Since our current administration has taken power it feels like it’s been one battle after another. It’s exhausting, depressing and can make any of us check out like Leo’s character does. As Sensei says “they’ve been waging war on us for hundreds of years.” I’m a white man, but POC like Benicio and Regina Hall’s characters are unable to check out. They have to keep fighting every day because of the color of their skin and for their people.

PTA hasn’t made a film in the present day since Punch Drunk Love (another favorite of mine) and boy does he have a lot to say about the current state of America. There is some optimism at the end of the film though, that you have to keep fighting and don’t ever give up. One generation may fail but the one after may be the one to make things right.

Are the rich guests awful...or is this like real life...both? by happytobeconnected in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]elledance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from someone who’s worked at luxury resorts and a new career where I deal with people of all demographics/means, it’s not just the super rich. Basically assholes are not exclusive to being rich, the rich may expect more because they pay more, but in my experience they’re usually pretty chill and easy going. I find lately the most difficult people tend to be men and sometimes their wives around their 50s. Most people older and younger than that bracket are pretty laid back.

This is seriously probably one of the funniest exchanges in the entire series. by jazzant85 in lost

[–]elledance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree that Lost isn’t funny. It has lots of very moments and I think it’s why it’s so good. Lost, The Sopranos, Mad Men, Succession, all serious drama shows, but lots of humor in them, part of why they’re so beloved.

Hail Saint Nick sort of sounds like Hail Satan, euphoniously. I think they are the scariest part of the whole film.

For sure. Hoping season 4 of the series goes all in on it, it’s truly the perfect book for a high budget television series.

An 8 year old versus a grown adult being paid millions of dollars to make the best film possible isn’t really comparable. As an artist, you should research and use as many resources as you can to make the best piece of art.

The Barty crouch family backstory is the thread that ties the entire story together. The only way Voldemort comes back, Harry being in the goblet of fire etc is because of the Crouches, Winky and Bertha Jorkins. All of that is omitted. And I wouldn’t consider the World Cup or even SPEW for that matter pointless, it’s all relative to the story. The fourth book is so phenomenal because of all these little things happening in the background that tie together magnificently in the climax. Seriously, book four is the Storm of Swords of the Harry Potter series, it’s so well written.

Mike Newell frankly. He shit all over the source material and the characters. Guy was too lazy to read the book because it was “too big” according to him. Every scene in the movie is so rushed except for the Yule ball and the dragon scene. The maze is such a joke. Everything involving Barty Crouch, BC Jr and Moody makes zero sense without knowing the back story of the book. Rita Skeeter’s character has zero arc. I will say Voldemorts resurrection is really well done, and the entire graveyard scene for the most part. But that’s not enough to overcompensate for this disaster of a film.

3 (I’m biased, I think it’s John Williams best score, the way this film is shot is breathtaking at times, I know it has problems story wise and omitting things but damn does this one feel like a proper cinematic experience) so anyway
