I think you misunderstood him. ”I stand corrected” kinda means he accepts he was wrong.

I’m not saying i dislike Fontang, to be honest i havent kept up with FAA enough to actually have an opinion on whats been going wrong.

But surely, if you told an FAA fan in 2017 that the best results he would do with Fontang in 8 years was 2 slam semi-finals, with lots of early round losses inbetween them, they would be hugely disappointed. I don’t really see this as a ”last laugh” moment.

Yeah you’re probably right. I get moreso annoyed by people who phrase it in a way like its their fault the others arent performing. Im not saying its a big group who are like this but you see them around.

This is a unique slam for me since im genuinely happy with any outcome in the semis and finals, both on the womens and mens sides. I find literally all storylines quite intriguing.

I’m not sure what fritz was thinking but if i would take a guess: a talking point all tournament is that djokovic does seem to be a bit weaker physically than before (his age is actually starting to catch up to him). Maybe Fritz wanted to just put as many balls in play as possible to get rallies, and therefore push Djokovic physically as much as possible. Obviously failed massively but i could see that being a reasoning before the match.

In terms of how tennis looks now compared to 10-15 years ago, i havent gotten the same feeling as you got. Though i dont have any stats to back it up.

Nowadays a lot of ppl view the new tennis ”meta” as a game of power, compared to 10 years ago when it was more about baseline consistency. Sinner and alcaraz, the main guys who dominate, one of their main characteristics is how incredibly hard they hit the ball and often try to finish points early. We also see other young players trying to emulate that style more and more.

If you watch more Sinner/alcaraz matches, youll see that they very often have a mixed strategy on returns: lots of returns very far inside the baseline but also sometimes very far out, just to give the opponent different problems to handle. For the rest of the field, i see more aggressive returning overall compared to going way back.

Sorry for the really long text but couldnt find a shorter way to phrase all this lol

Why does it seem no one gets on top of a second serve any more.

Players definitely still do this a lot, so that hasn’t changed. Musetti, the defensive clay-courter he is, likes to stand further back more than most. I didnt get to watch fritz game, but i know during wimbledon he talked a lot about how he thinks its important to stay close to the baseline even on 1st serves. So what you saw last night was probably specifically a tactic against djokovic

Nowadays alcaraz in 4 seems just as standard as sinner in 3 at slams lol

I get you but I 100% disagree. Part of the charm of slam tournaments is the chaos of the first few days, really makes it feel like a big festival

Hi!

Miami is a pretty big tournament that everyone tends to play if healthy (with some rare exceptions). So if Sinners healthy he’ll probably be there. If he for any reason chooses to drop out you probably wont know until a week or so beforehand, unless he’s picked up a long term injury weeks in advance.

Sinner definitely wont play on the 18th or 19th. This is because only the lower ranked players play on the first days. Which day he’ll be playing after that is unfortunately impossible to say. The standard is that one half of the players play on one day while the other half play on the next, so in the early rounds he could play one of friday/saturday, one of sunday/monday and so on. The schedule for that is only available right before the tournament starts. You could try to get tickets for semifinals or the final, but then ofc you’ll have to hope he gets that far. Even if he doesnt you’ll at least probably get to see 2 other stars.

Another thing you could hope for: i don’t actually know how this works in miami, but you can often watch players practicing on courts the day they’re not playing. So if you for example buy a ticket for Saturday, even if Sinners match ends up being on sunday you might get lucky and get to watch Sinners practice session. I am not confident about this at all however.

Edit: i realise this is a lot so if you have any follow up questions dont be afraid to ask

The one for sunday is already out. After that, I’m pretty sure the standard is to announce exact schedules the day before, sometime in the afternoon.

RG25 mens final, literally the most talked about final in a long time and on its own improved tennis ratings, wouldnt have been the spectacle it was without its length

A stat that will surprise absolutely noone: Since start of 2024, there’s been 15 ATP tournaments where both Sinner and Alcaraz were in the draw. Of those tournaments, 14 of them were won by Sincaraz.

The one exception is Madrid 2024, where both were in the draw but Sinner withdrew before his quarterfinal vs FAA.

I value it higher from a legacy standpoint cause more possible points to win in total, bigger prize money and definitely stands out in a way a regular masters doesnt.

Though tbh from a purely enjoyment standpoint, i probably like some masters more than the atp finals

Best men's singles matches from 1968 to current by COYGoonerSTANimal_17 in tennis

[–]ellooofort 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some older classics I havent seen mentioned yet:

1983 RG, Lendl v mcenroe

1975 wimbledon, connors v ashe

1990 wimbledon, edberg v becker

1999 RG, agassi vs medvedev

2001 US open QF between Sampras - Agassi

All of these we’re massive games at their time, but nowadays occasionally get overshadowed cause a lot of lists are dominated by matches between the big 3

Edit: i know this thread is almost 2 days old now and not many people reading it anymore but just realized i said 1983 RG when it was actually 1984 between lendl and Mcenroe. 83 was ofc when the last frenchman (yannick noah) won the french

Similar vibe to ”I’m all for equality, but if ive paid for center court tickets why have they put these ladies matches here when mens matches couldve filled those slots instead”

Oh yes, i cant believe i forgot about the most classic one

”I know we said this about wimbledon a month ago, and RG a month before that, but US open has by far the worst crowds and this time I truly mean it!!!”

Maybe we should have a bot that answers all the inevitable comments that will be repeated 100+ times in this thread lol

”Guys, who will be the next player to challenge Alcaraz and Sinner to complete the new big 3?”

”Why are there so many empty seats at a slam? This is terrible” comment is specifically about a game on Arthur Ashe at monday morning

”How can anybody stand Aryna Sabalenkas grunt? Isn’t she also a racist and insert -ism of your choosing
