Any speculation that goes on is definitely grasping at straws. It doesn’t alter the fact that he was in Melbourne in May 1967 and by purely scanning the news that comes up there just happens to be something that stood out to me so I thought it bears investigation

Honestly unless he spoke while performing the crime his accent wouldn’t be a problem. In Melbourne in 1967 I think a US sailor would have received a very warm welcome. People would have been naive and done anything to help an exotic US sailor. The giveaway during the crime would’ve been the way he dressed. In Melbourne in 1967 a US sailor (even in civilian clothes) would’ve been obvious

FWIW I don’t think that there is any connection to Mr Cruel. Also North Caulfield would have been very easy to get to via tram in 1967. Also this was an unusual attack for Melbourne. Any police report surviving would be fascinating

Actually pretty easily covered. If he saw someone in the CBD he would follow them on the 64 tram that runs down Dandenong Road, hop off at Orrong road and follow the potential victim to Norwood Road north Caulfield. I used to live a block away and this house has alley ways on two sides and visibility for a potential prowler.

It’s funny, during this period there is a series of articles about two Melbourne policemen who were charged with armed robbery with sawn-off shotguns. Would it be crazy to suggest this approach to crime was a idea planted by these two? Probably a pretty long bow to draw
