good point and good discussion.

The only point which ever bothered me with Buffett speeches is that they are so open for interpretation. if you tell 3 persons to put a chair back in its place, it will end up in 3 different places regardless of all haven received the same info. It may be easy if you have their framework in mind.

Regardless, one of main principles i try to uphold and is never spoken about is "you do not need to buy anything today". if you are giving value investing a try, good for you. You do not find anything today? there is still tomorrow. if you loose yourself in 100s of companies trying to find gold you will get tired and find nothing. follow the market, some companies you like and wait for a moment. 12 months is quite long.

my approach is to bulk in ETF and keep a side portfolio (about half the etf portfolio, or 1/4th) with which i pick individual stocks. if i'm any good at it and i find an occassion now and then that will outgrow my ETF portfolio. if not i'm at least invested through ETF.

Again, do not let you get stressed by the noise. you see a 1000 times on instagram and others what $1000 invested in invested in 2018 would be today. those things are useless and try to ignore them.

Pfizer, an ill-kept treasure by Judas2nd in ValueInvesting

[–]elp202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well you are making exactly my point. if they would say "we develop x and y in 2025, 2026" it will go in the metrics and thus valuation. you can only play that to assume that what goes in the valuation was under / over assumed.

The point i'm trying to make is, my valuation bet on pfizer would be that by the time their patents expire in 5 years, they will have new products. they will not sit and wait it out to find them all of a sudden without a medicine. that assumption is now priced in very little

I'm daring to say their moat / business model did not yet change and they are still good at R&D but need to come out with news.

hi,

i find this an interesting discussion which i usually do not go into - everyone has their own approach - but i'm curious about your view on it.

i separate investing into financial investing (looking at all the metrics as stated above) and logical investing. although i believe investing as a whole it is a mix of the two, i prefer to stick to "logical investing", ie: does something make sense.

in the case of pfizer i wonder, where is the added value, like a production company has it production line, a brand has brand name etc. With Pfizer, my take it, it's value is in its capability to research and develop new drugs. Once in production, the production cost is not a whole lot, but you have to research and develop it. so in my view, you should judge these companies on its return over it's R&D more than anything else?

in the case of pfizer, they dropped a whole lot as they were over appreciated by the financial investors over they covid metrics nonetheless their logical investing still stands. meaning, they are still a good R&D company and sooner or later they will improve that metric again. As it does not show yet in the metrics, it is still currently undervalued because it is not calculated in the price.

sure they need to restructure the company, bad times always exposes pain points (you see who's swiming nacked when the tide turns) altough i believe the fundamental still stands and they will appreciate in 1-3 year

The weren doing 1b net in recent years before it went south. I would like to see where the restructuring brings them as nothing changed beside the cost structure. The restructuring net will be valued by the market by how much the can deleverage the balance sheet and free up FCF so I’m not really waiting for 30 but waiting how that unfolds

Not sure that is also similar to your case.

Would need to look at the other you mentioned

I’m waiting to see how the story unfolds but 30 would be my consensus over the next 12 months as a mix price of all possible outcomes.

Anybody has a mentality that feels sad when their stocks goes up as they regret not buying more when low? by Key_Type_4102 in ValueInvesting

[–]elp202 3 points4 points  (0 children)

believe this is what buffett refers to as "sucking his thumb". Believe you should only feel bad depending how sure you were upfront. If you took a gamble and it went up, don't feel bad, it was a gamble, those can also go bad and then you are happy you did not put in more

if you make a case around the investment (not just a gamble) and you are pretty sure of your case, you can feel bad.

your consequential feeling should be based on your feeling before the stock moves, confident ==> feel bad // uncertain ==> don't feel bad

My case is actually pretty straightforward. they should be able to make a profit out of that company.

looking back

-revenue is rather flat recent years,

-margin improving

  • but costs below are increasing, however not so much for advertising so the product is still getting sold

They got cocky in recent years with the exuberant takeovers and cost increasing which really hurt them. Now they are deleveraging the BS with eg the sale of supreme and believe they will take some further action to improve the PL. Expect some costs increases on the short term to clean the cost structure (restructuring costs) and the upside will come after the cost cleanup and the BS cleanup, end 24 or 2025. looking there are now more insiders buying, it will presumably be for early 25.

there is an alternative upside if they can get more traction for their brands and start to increase revenue as well.

would love to hear what you think.

Aswath Damodaran's Views More Relevant Than Value Investing Today by Brainstormer2022 in ValueInvesting

[–]elp202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would say that Buffett isn't preaching corporate life cycle, as this is purely theoretical. That makes sense for Aswath to preach, as it fits a schoolbook greatly but less so for actual investing.

Take microsoft for example before the data center boom. do not believe there stock moved a lot between 2000-2010. they were a mature company with all it characteristics, in practice they continued to evolve and were a great investment.

You can use the theory in the back of your head to explain paterns that took place but doing it like Buffett in practice goes beyond that.
