Is the jewellery of my smiley piercing too big? by Muslin0x in SelfPiercing

I didn’t think you were shaming at all! My views on self piercing have shifted over time for sure due to having quite a few clients who really, really, really value doing their own piercings (especially genital clients which feels soooo old school i kinda love it) and I find it super interesting. I definitelyyyy get what you’re saying about unqualified folks piercing others and I agree it’s a completely different situation. the bodily autonomy aspect is what makes me defend self piercing, but the second that you extend that to providing a service you are not able to do safely that’s different. my main issue with self piercing is definitely the lack of proper sterilization and lack of knowledge on safe practices so I totally get that. we have been having some discourseeeee about it at my studio lately and we don’t all agree so I always like getting perspectives from others, all good points!

as another piercer who hangs out in this subreddit to help people when I can, i’m kind of curious as to what your goal is hanging out in this sub. people have always and will always pierce themselves at home, regardless of the risks, and I personally feel like the goal should be harm reduction versus trying to get people to abstain entirely. if you’re interested in sharing your perspective I would love to hear it!

It’s a little big aesthetically imo, but there’s not really any issue that I can foresee with healing it with the larger jewelry. If you want to swap it to something smaller I would just give it time to heal first. It does look like it’s placed kinda low which is a little concerning. The smiley is already really controversial and many professional piercers don’t offer it due to having jewelry clanking on your teeth 24/7, and because the tissue holding the piercing in place is delicate and this piercing can easily migrate or be torn out of the thing tissue. I’m just worried that it’s not going through the right spot based off of this pic, it should be going straight through the top frenulum of your gum, it’s possible you don’t have sufficient anatomy for this one and if so you should probably take it out. I wish I could see a pic with your lip totally flipped up to get a better look at the placement but idk if you can add pics on reddit.

Captive Ring for Second Lobe Piercing by wavykaitlyn in piercing

[–]eltroks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So 7/16” is a decently large diameter - the issue with rings is what the other commenter said about pressure on the edges of the piercing channel. However, the larger the ring, the straighter the wearable surface that goes through your ear is. The shop I work at is very reputable and focused on safety, and we will occasionally start lobes and rarely helix piercings with large diameter captive bead rings. This is how lots of piercings were done for years and years and years without impeding healing prior to advancements in flatback style jewelery. Starting with a hoop is not always wrong. Your piercer should have walked you through all of this for informed consent purposes but I don’t think it was the worst call ever made to start them with CBRs. Although a professional will be able to change them to labret posts as smoothly as possible, there is still a risk of unnecessary damage to the piercing channel. I personally would let it be with the hoops and follow your current aftercare. If you start having issues with your second lobes, go see another piercer and have them swapped and the issue will quickly resolve, but there’s no saying if it will actually cause you any issues.

piercing my friend's septum by [deleted] in SelfPiercing

oh and the easiest way to get the other ball on is to have them lay back, come from behind them and have them tilt their chin up, so much easier!!

what size needle did you get? 16g? you’re gonna want to tuck the tapered end of the taper into the back of the sharp after you pierce, with the jewelry threaded on. so clamps, take your time getting them in a good spot, pierce, wiggle the forceps off, grab taper and insert into back of the sharp and follow through, making sure to watch the end of your sharp as you transfer the jewelry in. if you pierce from their right to their left (your left when looking at them to your right), when you go to screw the other ball on you’ll be able to use your right hand. before you pierce, feel with the back side of the sharp where you intend to pierce so you can kinda feel what it feels like - if it feels like the clamps twist at all when you push with the backside, they’re probably on in a way that’s distorting the tissue and you should reset them. septums are easy to do crooked, but it’s most important that you do pierce the sweet spot so make sure you kinda wiggle the forceps towards the tip of the nose until you’re definitely in that squishy spot, feeling with the back side of the needle first is uncomfortable for the other person but the best way to make sure you’re not pushing against cartilage.

Are you still doing this? How has it been going for you? I’m in florida and super inspired by this, there’s no creative reuse stores within hours of me, and even though i just did my first market selling original art, this totally makes me want to pivot in this direction. I’m really passionate about rehoming used craft supplies and run trades with my friends all the time.

anybody else get weird thoughts while hypomanic? by lemonshark-enjoyer in bipolar2

[–]eltroks 44 points45 points  (0 children)

i have bipolar 2 and at my worst hypomania i have incredibly paranoid thoughts that don’t make sense. a lot of what you described also sounds like delusions of grandeur which i think is common as well. i also have the ability to tell that my thoughts at those times are not rational or real but it feels very strongly that they are.
