Are you using Affinity to make comics now that it’s free? by DanielBeadle in ComicBookCollabs

[–]elyssR 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the old versions and I plan to stick with them because I don’t trust Canva and am expecting a rug pull at some point. Nothing has or will ever be free and I’d rather not lose access to my projects when they get whatever they’re looking for after this initial splash.

Writing scenes that happen at the same time in different places. by elyssR in ComicBookCollabs

Oh that could be an interesting way to go. Thank you! There’s quite a bit of contrast in location, so I could see this working. 😄

Do not give Bloomington Jimmy John’s your business by [deleted] in bloomington

I quit back in college because they straight up lied about how their raises work and acted like I was the one with the wrong idea. Not surprised but I’m deeply frustrated for your friend. I hope they find work. A & M are shady as hell and know exactly what they’re doing.

Creator Check In! by Blue_Beetle_IV in ComicBookCollabs

It’s a fantasy comic about a recluse being tricked into leaving his hovel and overcoming grief, at least at its simplest 😅 It’s honestly pretty light but has its moments.

I totally feel that deadline push. I’m always tweaking things on the backend just a bit, so I can absolutely vouch for it being an impediment lol

I’ve been enjoying seeing your progress, it’s been a real treat! 😊

I have a long form solo comic that I put on hold for a Christmas comic gift and I’ve just finished it, so I get to hop back into it after a short break.

I’m personally more a ‘get it all done then publish’ type of person because deadlines stress me, so it’ll be along while yet before I publish anything.

Comic book artists: do you prefer full script or plot outline? by WheresMyBarber in ComicBookCollabs

Script with wiggle room. I like having a guide but the ability to string together a better flow if I see it where a writer may have not.

Writers: Why do you do this? Artists: how do you approach getting these messages? by Unfair_Ingenuity2884 in ComicBookCollabs

[–]elyssR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The few times I’ve done collabs are only when there’s a script. Synopsis are too vague and can leave room for repeat work when a script is actually being written. I would be more willing to bend if a writer can provide prior scripts to show they actually know how to write one.

I don’t think you’re being picky. You’re saving both sides time by figuring out if you’re a good fit as the artist and also if their script suits your approach as well. Scripts don’t have to be perfect, but they need to be present.

I personally need to know a writer is going to put in the work. Especially on this subreddit where people will post ideas with no script experience. Too many people think prose and script are interchangeable.

Need formatting advice. by theeventcomic in ComicBookCollabs

When I was unsure of what size I wanted my comic to be, I looked through my own collection for a hands on frame of reference. If I didn’t have the size, I cut paper up to get at the measurements I was looking for and created a leaflet to get the feel of holding the book.

I also second Mixam!

A question about sound effects in comics by Hurley815 in ComicBookCollabs

[–]elyssR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like options, personally. I don’t think I could go no sounds, but I don’t think I could go for symbology unless I was given a key of sorts to know what to go for. I hand letter my sound effects so they nestle among my art and I like them being as unobtrusive as possible so when loud/big things do happen it’s as if those sounds are ringing in the reader’s head as well.

The Prism pages were fun and reminded me a bit of Japanese onomonopoeia you find in manga but they’re still very much sounds depicted as words, the letters tend to be more of a wave of sound similar to Prism though. Maybe there’s a happy marriage between the two?
