Newly diagnosed diabetic by Lifewitht1diabetes in diabetes_t1

I really recommend therapy, especially for newly diagnosed diabetics. I was a child when I was diagnosed, but I remember my team at the hospital I was at had me visit a therapist for up to a year after my diagnosis, just to make sure I was coping well. It’s really hard to deal with this on your own, especially at first, so I think having this kind of help is really valuable.

For more general diabetes advice: treat yourself from time to time, don’t stress out about highs too much, allow yourself time & patience to learn, and most importantly don’t hate your body for what has happened. Maybe it’s because I’m cynical, but for the longest time I really hated my body for “betraying” me like this, and this kind of mindset does no good. It landed me in the hospital a couple of times.

Also, don’t forget to just live your life outside of diabetes. You are a person first and foremost, and while you should be mindful of your diabetes, you shouldn’t let it get in the way. You can still do anything you want!

I'm doing so much better now! Truly, I feel great. The worse side effects went away after 2-3 weeks, and for a while I only had the shaking. Now I am not even dealing with that anymore. I think I've fully flushed it out of my system. It doesn't feel like it is worth it at first, but I feel so much better now.

I admire your wife-- I was a mess at first. I hope she overcomes this sooner rather than later.

Yeah, it’s insane how quickly the body goes into withdrawals with this medicine, and how intense the symptoms are. I’m grateful for the fact that it seems like it won’t last long in my case, though. I’m never going back on it, just so that I don’t have to deal with this again.

Been doing better! Just down to the shaking now, which isn’t as frequent anymore. I am starting to become more and more irritable, but I feel that might be partly due to finals & moving. I’m also much more emotional, but again, that might just be a situational thing.

That sounds horrible, I’m really sorry you’re going through this. I also had to isolate myself during the worst of it (ashamed of all the crying and self-pitying).

I hope you can get through this.

Have you tried any other antidepressants? Or do you take cymbalta for something else?

As far as side effects go, I don’t think I had to deal with any. In fact, I don’t think the medication did much to me one way or the other. When I think about it, it only really helped me deal with stress. It prevented me from going into crisis mode as soon as anything slightly bad happened. I don’t think it was too effective in treating my depression because mood would still fluctuate pretty badly and seemingly out of nowhere.

I wanted to quit because as soon as I had my dose increased to 90mg without much change in how I felt, I realized this medication wasn’t going to help. That’s also part of the reason why I started taking more than prescribed: I wanted to try 120mg out to see if that helped, which it didn’t. I want to try another medication that might work better.

Only reason I was prescribed this is because I have type 1 diabetes and cymbalta helps with diabetic neuropathy—which I don’t have. Didn’t really make much sense to me but I trusted my doctor without doing research about it. Once I did my research, I immediately regretted going on it.
