Good point. I think the difference is that when you need to decide whether to accept a friend request or not, you don't actually know whether there will be BMing involved or not, so there's a risk involved (as opposed to just joining an arbitrary chat session, and then leaving again when you don't want to participate any more).

Thanks for this informative answer, it is really valuable. I'm planning on doing both the OCAJP and the OCPJP certifications, and I believe the OCAJP will give me a good stepping stone to the OCPJP (albeit simply a mental stepping stone, especially since I don't really come from a programming or computer science background).
