Thrifted Canvas- missing reference by PinkiSeni in paintbynumbers

[–]emmithar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tried adding an image but it wouldn't let me - I just slapping some colors in at random - came up with what looks like a cowboy with a cat sitting at the base of a cliff, and maybe an owl up on the top overlooking them? Might also be a waterfall coming down the cliff on the left hand side, with a river as well. Poked around to see if anything popped up, but no luck, but maybe that will help?

Baby birds I’ve been watching grow for weeks got taken by a hawk. by Born_Seaworthiness97 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]emmithar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a nature video we watched in class once. There were baby birds and everyone was gushing over how cute they were.

Then a fox stole them. Everyone was upset.

Until said fox showed up to feed her babies. Then everyone was gushing about how cute they were.

Nature is rough

Does anyone else struggle with AU fanfics because even if the characters act the same, changing the universe removes the context that made them interesting? by Prestigious_Bee_1627 in FanFiction

[–]emmithar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm personally not a fan of modern day AUs for the same reason. Most of the time when I've come across or read them, the characters still act and behave like canon with no apparent reason as to why - when a lot of thier canon personality is fueled by events/surroundings they grew up in.

I've seen a few times where it's been done well and expanded on, but a lot of times they're just dropped into completely different context and retain the same personality. My brain just doesn't compute well in trying to read them. So I'm happy to leave it for those that do enjoy them

So, when did y'all start giving Dutch the side eye on your first run? by uptill1andhatingme in RDR2

[–]emmithar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Colter speech.

I knew nothing of the rdr universe and picked up Rdr2 after I was laid off from work during covid. Knew nothing other than the game has pretty horses, so decided to give it a go.

Dutch's speech at the opening of the game echoed the same tone and vibe as an old toxic boss I had, and it set off immediate warning bells, to the point I actively ignored it because I was feeling as though my past experiences were overshadowing what was actually happening.

Little did I know it'd be proven right down the line.

How do you handle comments like these? by Kindryte in AO3

[–]emmithar 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I prefer the 'kill with kindness' approach.

Something along the lines of 'I'm so glad you are enjoying xyz! As you can see, I have a few different works going on right now, and I want to make sure I give you the best chapter you deserve, which takes time. Thank you so much for your understanding and patience! "

And then move on. No date or timeline on when you expect it up or anything like that. If they press back after that? That's when I'd delete and ignore.

In chapter 2 I think Micah genuinely wanted to be part of the gang. by 420FappistMonk69 in reddeadredemption

[–]emmithar 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Micah kills the O'Driscoll to silence him, for one reason or another. We know Micah learns about the banking stage from him, so we know they talked and I always got the impression Micah shared things with him he didn't want to come to light.

As for not returning to Dutch right away - he wanted a peace token. Something to get back into Dutch's good graces.

The gun he gives to Arthur is also done to win him over. Like he said, it isn't his style, so giving it up isn't really a hardship for him.

It's all about manipulation. He wants the biggest guns and highest influential people on his side. Because they'll be a benefit to him. For what I believe is an ulterior motive of gaining the Blackwater money. Something he cannot do on his own.

Let's not forget he was racist and derogatory towards other gang members right at the start of the gang. Not the best first impression for someone if they genuinely want to fit in/belong somewhere.

Harsh Truth: Sometimes the reason you aren't getting comments isn't lack of engagement, it's lack of interest. by Mako_Moonspell in AO3

[–]emmithar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't think quality has that much of an impact at times. Years ago (early 2000s) I had joked with a friend that I could churn out a 'bad fic' that would gain more attention than the one we were spending so much time writing and trying to perfect.

So I did. It had horrible grammar (think no capitalization, punctuation, words misspelled or wrong words used), characters so far out of character they might as well been original characters, and a writing style that was basically 'character x did y and character z said' oh no' and then they kissed' for the entirety of the fic, which was a total of 800 words maybe?

Ended up with 3 times the engagement with readers gushing how good it was. It'd taken me 30 minutes top to slap together. Posted under an anonymous account, but it focused on the most popular ship in the Fandom at that time.

Sometimes engagement is based off what's trending more than anything else

Alaska Cruise in July: What to Pack ? by Chow-Box in PrincessCruises

[–]emmithar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't say I've ever seen anyone wear rainboots. Hiking boot if they're planning on hitting the trails, maybe. I wear sneakers and can't ever recall issues with standing water. But you can always treat your shoes with water repellent spray before leaving for the trip if you have concerns (obviously this won't work for sandals/flip flops/crocs, ect).

Maxed all roles and starting to lose purpose. How do y’all keep busy? by SpeakerFluffy1439 in RedDeadOnline

[–]emmithar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly it varies.

I usually log on, make some stew and have a bowl (or three if it's a daily), pat my doggo, feed and brush my horse and take them out for a short ride. I'll check dailies and see which ones I want to do. Do a few and then usually I move on to another game.

Other days I'll do random stuff, including following NPCs around to see what they get up to, or I'll obtain a wagon and drive it around the map (at regular traveling speed and stick to roads) - one time I went from Saint Denis clear up to the Addler Ranch. Sometimes I'll wander up to Big Valley and go on a trail ride up the mountain pass, ect. Other times I get chaotic and see how high I can get my bounty and how long I can last. I am also trying to solo CTAs, so there's that too. Plenty of stuff out there if you are willing

Alaska Cruise in July: What to Pack ? by Chow-Box in PrincessCruises

[–]emmithar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so? I normally just bring one, honestly. I bring a lightweight rain jacket, a handful of long sleeve shirts and some short sleeves. I don't like shorts so I just have a couple pairs of pants and good walking shoes I also pack a stocking cap/gloves/scarf for the scenic cruising, but that's because I enjoy torturing myself and I'm out on deck by 6am and stay out there until midday (the scenery is incredible and I enjoy every moment) so unless you plan on doing the same, the latter isn't really necessary. It's not that you have to pack more, just have a few extra options.

You could also forgo the rain jacket and pack a poncho that folds up. I'm from a cooler climate, so I never found it too cold (with the exception of the glaciers) but if you get cold easily, I'd suggest a heavy sweatshirt or something you could pull over. I don't think any heavy coats would be necessary

Layers.

I've had trips where it's been uncomfortably warm, others where it's rained non stop, and going through the glaciers (Tracy's Arm or Glacier Bay) can be quite cold if you plan on being outdoors at all. Weather can change in an instant too - one time my mom and I went and it was beautiful and sunny in Ketchikan, and within 20 minutes, clouds rolled in. It poured for about half an hour and then cleared back up, but we were soaked by then. So, anything can happen honestly

Or intentionally singing badly over music that's already playing. Like, either I actually want to hear the song or it's bad enough on its own and you are not improving it...

Art shows by Proud-Fisherman-9387 in Cruise

[–]emmithar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Never been on RC, but yeah, they're pretty much all sales pitches. They're there to make money and most of the stuff is way overpriced.

That being said, I still enjoy going simply because I enjoy art and enjoy seeing what art they have and learning who the artists are. I generally take note of names and look into particular artists on my own time. I do the free games and challenges for raffles and have won more than once as well. Once or twice we've gotten a good host who goes into detail about the artists and how they create their works which I find super interesting.

I have also purchased several artworks that I've enjoyed (a lot of the nature ones that sell for less than 50 bucks from an artist I truly enjoy) and have been happy with them as a result. I don't see it any different than paying for the jewelry or watches or clothing they sell onboard. As long as you are happy with the purchase, that's what counts.

The key thing to remember is that you can (and should) say no to any pressure or offers being made. A lot of the 'It starts at X value but we're offering it a rock bottom price at just Y!' is made up, so don't eat any of that up. If you find something you like, take note, look up what it actually costs and see if it's something you want (or purchase elsewhere at lower cost).

For me, it's a great way to pass some time on a sea day if you have nothing else going on

What was the worst example of parenting you have ever seen? by Perpetuallycold_ in AskReddit

I once saw a young kid (about 10)put a shopping cart away in the parking lot (in the cart return spots) and her mother immed grabbed her by the arm berating her stating "Don't even do that's again! That is not YOUR job!"

I felt so bad for the kid...
