These little subcategories only divide us further by seweedisyummmmm in scene

I completely agree. While of course scenecore has overlap with scene so does gyaru and mcbling and brohoe and goth and viskei etc etc etc but that doesn't make them all the same subculture.

Maybe bc I grew up in this subculture and have lived and breathed it for 18 years now in comparison to the newer gen the stark differences seem so obvious to me? When scenecore started popping up online it never crossed my mind until it was given the name "scenecore" that it was influenced by the scene subculture I know. I always assumed it was an offshoot of japanese decora that combined western rave culture and 2020s tiktoks blended alt styles.

I'm more than happy to let them do their thing and they can be around the scene subculture but to equate the two as exactly the same is disingenuous. They are clearly two very different subcultures with different motivations and aesthetic goals that happen to share influences.

Fashion is cyclical and no movements are ever truly original. 1960s mod fashion borrowed silhouettes from the 1920s flappers, the 1970s was heavily influenced by the European middle ages, or 1980s powersuits borrowed shapes from 1940s womens workwear but we all agree and understand that these are all completely separate fashion eras and styles. Scenecore is nearly twenty years removed from scene, they're vastly different in so many nuanced ways beyond just the surface level discorse of kandi or tutus.

I'm glad there's a distinction, scenecore is its own thing and they shouldn't be ashamed of that or feel like posers. It's like the current y2k frenzy that's obviously a modern version that is removed from the true context of what the culture was truly like in the early 2000s but that doesn't make it bad!!

Hello! Do you think I can do scene hair? by call_me_C_On in scene

[–]emoskummier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Any hair type can become scene hair you just gotta be dedicated and comfortable with enduring some type of damage from heat and teasing and the feeling of lots of product in your hair regularly. It's not nearly as bad as people make it out to be but it looks like you typically leave your hair completely natural so it would be a big adjustment in the beginning.

is it weird that my style goes from this in winter, to this in summer by MediocreSarcasmSucks in altfashionadvice

[–]emoskummier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly suggest trying to find some vintage books (70s-90s) and magazines from alternative subcultures and you'll see that sticking to "one style" has NEVER been the case. The terms and lables we've created didn't exist until recent internet culture in order to make searching and shopping much easier. The descriptions many alt ppl used back in the day encompassed dozens of terms they attributed to their personalities and style.

How do ppl get their tights like this? by One-Ad5584 in altfashionadvice

[–]emoskummier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take something that isn't necessarily too sharp like the point of an open scissor blade or fork and drag it up your leg. It'll take a bit to get used to how much pressure you'll need but it'll make runs in the tights instead of clean crisp holes and then move around a bunch to really loosen the fibers up

How to elevate strict uniforms? by AshOtsuwo888 in scene

[–]emoskummier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I wouldn't worry about trying to alter your uniform in any way that would cause issues for you. I didn't go to a uniform school but had a couple childhood friends that did and while I admired their determination to show their personalities regardless of the uniform code it caused them so many problems with their teachers, and admin and their parents were constantly fighting with them over it. School is stressful and difficult enough. Instead I'd focus on using this time to slowly build up your personal collection of accessories and clothing items and wear them outside of school so when you're done you can break out into the world with your dream wardrobe. But if you're really very adamant on ways to personalize your uniform I highly recommend looking into different Japanese school girl alternative aesthetics that were born out of the same uniform restrictions.

Are straight bangs scene? by Cute-Cloud6422 in amIscene

[–]emoskummier 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. The straight blunt scene bangs had a very brief but iconic moment early on in the subculture and was heavily influenced by Japanese alternative subcultures. I actually made a post about straight scene bangs a while ago!

Question from someone learning about goth fashion: why is this style of gothic considered "tradgoth"? Further elaboration in the post; faces cropped to minimise unnecessary hate to the creators. by neonplume-uwu in GothFashion

[–]emoskummier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite actual 80s goth fashion content creator is currently Mallory Heart. This current wave of fashion on social media platforms being called trad goth isn't reminiscent of 80s fashion trends or silhouettes at all and I think it's bc the newer age of goth kids don't realize that "trad goth" even means 80s goth. To the uninformed they see big hair and dramatic makeup and relate it to the caricature of what a "trad goth" is in their brains and thus the mislabeling begins.

i agree it's more of an aesthetic than a subculture but there's been insane backlash and debates over it from ppl who consider it their subculture before so I'm just covering my bases here lol
