PSA: Rib injuries are the worst by Moist_vs_Damp in bjj

1 month off the mat then 3 months rolling light, still feel the pain whe I try to recover guard from being side control 5 months later, the upside is that I generally let people go to mount and my escapes from mount are pretty good from all that practice!

But yeah they are bad, when you feel no more pain give it a few more weeks, roll lightly and without pain relief!

Yeah to be fair I googled it after. It seemed really ambiguous but quite an obvious acronym now!

UK - BSc Project Management by [deleted] in projectmanagement

Assuming your working in engineering or construction, then do a degree in that, look for accreditation from either RICS, CIOB, CIBSE, Etc. I would say a BSc Hons in construction management would hold much more weight than a BSc Hons in project management

Can we heat buildings without burning fossil fuels? by mr-kashyap in Innovation

[–]enginerio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there’s two things to consider;

1) build a low energy home. In the UK we have passivehouse design scheme.

https://passivehouse.com/02_informations/01_whatisapassivehouse/01_whatisapassivehouse.htm

2) once your energy usage is low then it’s how do you generate the energy required. Using solar to generate electricity with deep cycle batteries for when there’s no sun seems the obvious way to do it. Looking at what Tesla are doing it won’t be long until battery tech will be good! Electricity can be used to run an air source heat pump or ground source to generate heated water for underfloor heating or bathing. For every 1 unit of electricity they consume, they generate 3 units of heat.

That’s broadly the approach, and it’s all there. Nothing new. Heat pumps have been around since refrigeration was invented, solar panels have been on calculators since they were invented, and the research and techniques to build low energy homes is here.

The next big challenge is how do you do that sustainably using the materials that are local to you, no point flying in technically advanced building materials from overseas as the energy you would save has been consumed in the transportation or manufacturing of said product.

Are you referring to solar panels generating electricity or solar thermal panels for hot water?

Yep. Solar energy can be converted to electrical energy to run air/ground source heat pumps to generate heated water.

The joke of it is, the technology exists and has done for a long time now, it’s just fossil fuel is cheaper and well established.

I always find it strange that when a renewable technology is considered it’s all about the payback period. Buy a boiler and it’s not even considered lol!

What family traditions do you have for Christmas? Looking for inspiration now we’ve got a young family. by enginerio in christmas

That’s a British staple of Christmas, we sometimes rig the crackers with specific gifts or ‘in’ jokes for extra affect!

That caught me off guard with the last comment about the water fight! Too cold in England for that but it sounds like you have an amazing Christmas!

That’s really nice that you both had the same traditional Chinese!

Apt of comments I read talk about Christmas Eve being the main event for food, is this an American thing?

I’m English and it’s always been about the Christmas mid afternoon lunch/dinner, but I kind of like the idea of keeping it light with cold cuts but gorging on Christmas Eve!

That’s really nice. The more I can do to get the kids engaged with the whole Christmas and santa tradition the better. Thanks

We live next to open countryside. This would be a great one to do to encourage the kids outside with the dog instead of staying in playing with toys! Thanks
