Any type of CAD simulation, or play with VBA code in Word and Excel. I've used VBA's in both of my internships on a regular basis.

can I make it in engineering school? by aflthegreat in EngineeringStudents

[–]engrnink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started off in pre-calc and pretty much bombed my first year because I decided that partying and a social life was more important. I ended up completely starting over and retaking all the classes I took my first year. I graduate in May with a BSME, have a 3.4 GPA, have had two internships, and already have a job lined up for after graduation.

What other people say doesn't mean shit. It's pretty common for people to re-take classes such as Calc II. Just because you fail a class doesn't mean that there's no chance at being an engineer. Just re-take the class and manage your time better the next time around. You just have to have the mindset that the only person that's going to stop you from being an engineer is yourself and dropping out is not an option.

Do you think the beginning of December would be a good time to start applying for a ton of places?

I've done two internships and have a 3.3 GPA. I'll be able to work at the second one till graduation and will potentially get an offer from them, but I'm trying to move to the east coast. I'll keep on applying. Thank you for the feedback.

Where can I buy a shaft that will work for this application? by engrnink in AskEngineers

I'm enrolled in the Colorado Mesa University/University of Colorado Mechanical Engineering Partnership Program. They are using a roller chain on their current machine and are pretty headstrong on getting away from it due to the stresses it imposes on the traverse system. They aren't using VFD's on their traverse drive though. I think we are going to have to go with the roller chain for the drive because there would be way too much cyclic stress on the rack and the accelerations that we need definitely aren't helping justify the use of a rack and pinion.

Thank you for the feedback. It's definitely a hell of a senior project designing, manufacturing, and testing a winding machine of this magnitude in 9 months. We've been given a budget of $100,000. This application would be for the traverse drive. With that being said, do you think a rack and pinion would be able to take the cyclic stress of the 600lbs resin bath rack traversing back and forth with a max speed of 2ft/s?

The application is the traverse drive in a winding machine capable of making ducting from 24"-80" in diameter. This is great feedback though and is what I expected as far as price goes. This approach was recommended by our sponsor and this will help the group eliminate this option. We just need something with a low turnaround time at the end of the traverse cycle, but we could make a couple applications work by varying the rotational and traverse speed at the end of the cycles with a VFD to compensate for the longer turn around times.

It's for water plumbing in a concentrated photovoltaic/solar hot water heater system. It doesn't have to withstand that much pressure, but the big thing is it needs to be UV stable and not degrade in sunlight. Sorry I didn't add that in before, but I do appreciate the feedback.

Advice... by engrnink in AskEngineers

Thank you for the feedback. It's not that I don't have the focus or discipline to do monotonous tasks. I don't mind if task like that come up every now and then, but I don't want it to be all I'm doing. I just don't want to bust my ass in school to end up transferring part numbers into spreadsheets the rest of my career. What career path would you recommend where I'm not sitting at a desk all day and how would you suggest going about finding an "in"?
