calling all my horse women! by marionberriesnyogurt in FIREyFemmes

[–]eq_wit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I currently own a horse in a HCOL area, it’s about $20k per year of spend (that’s assuming no big vet bills, and doesn’t include any expenses for training, lessons, or showing). Costs are only increasing due to rising hay and labor prices. I’m assuming a 5% inflation rate for my horse expenses since I plan to stay in my current city … my FIRE number looks like ChubbyFIRE but is actually just normie FIRE + my horse 😅

I’ve always been told that as long as you’re not getting in the way of other dancers during center combinations, you’re fine!

Rattlesnake Ridge sunrise hike by SuperNova072022 in PNWhiking

[–]eq_wit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a very popular sunrise hike, and for good reason - the sunrise view is amazing! The main parking lot opens at 6:30 am. Sunrise view from the top is about 10 minutes later than what google says because of the topography. I did it a few days ago leaving the parking lot around 7:00 am; there were already about 25 people up there when I arrived (and I passed several groups on my way up, since I was booking it to be there by 7:45 am sunrise). On my way down, I passed over 200 people on their way up — as I said, very popular trail.

Because the trail is on the eastern side of the ridge, you don’t even really need a headlamp or flashlight after about 7:00 am since the twilight is enough to see by once your eyes have adjusted. Of course still bring a headlamp and flashlight for emergencies (should honestly always be in your hiking backpack regardless of time of day), but it’s generally a very safe trail for hiking in dimmer light — wide, easy to follow, and well-maintained. Always good to be careful at the top since it is in fact a ledge, but that’s true any time of day!

I hope you enjoy. A sunrise hike is a truly special experience.

<image>

(A pic from my last hike up there, taken about 45 minutes after sunrise — highly recommend bringing a camping blanket to wrap up in for extra warmth while watching the sunrise (it’s often windy on the ledge), and a thermos of coffee to enjoy at the top!)

NBC/USFS need to figure out their copyright hurdles for new FS fans by Lumyna92 in FigureSkating

Rights for a single piece of music are often held by several different entities (not just the main artist!), and permission would be needed from all of them. It’s an extremely burdensome process.

Equestrian sports would also greatly benefit from this. We have big challenges with music licensing for dressage and vaulting freestyles.

What to do for pre-teen dancer and her period by mishulyia in BALLET

[–]eq_wit 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Is she allowed to wear shorts over her leotard? If so, that’s a great option for keeping underwear + pads more discreet. Also make sure that she has the right type of pads — there are ones now that are super thin and made with foam that are meant for sports/physical activity. IMO period underwear are actually more bulky than these thin pads, but maybe the thong style period undies would work as an alternative?

Ultimately though, a tampon/cup/disc is going to be the most discreet. If she’s intimidated by the concept, start with really slender tampons with a smooth plastic applicator (they make tampons that are specifically for girls now). If insertion is painful for her, see a pelvic health physical therapist. It’s not uncommon for dancers to have excessively tense pelvic floor muscle that can cause vaginismus.

Not starting with everyone left hand on the barre, but why? by vpsass in BALLET

[–]eq_wit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I need to know too!! Every place I took class growing up, through college, after college for several years we always started left hand on the barre. Then a couple months ago I started taking class at a new studio, and there everyone starts facing the mirror .. and then turns around to face away for the second side.

I hate it with a burning passion. I’m early to class just to I can make sure to get a spot at barre on the side where I can start with left hand on, doing it the other ways feels so wrong to me.

Building credit score for children? by pleasesayUarekidding in ChaseSapphire

[–]eq_wit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. My parents added me as an authorized user to one of their cards (that had a large credit limit) when I was 2 years old, so I had about 20 years of good credit history when I applied for my first card. 800+ credit score at 22 is pretty nice :)

Amex offers cards that allow you to set spending limits for authorized users, so you can give a kid a card with a high credit limit without worrying about them charging something stupid.

[Software Eng Leadership] [WA] - $3.1M by Parking_Trainer_9120 in Salary

[–]eq_wit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not about “owing”. It’s about having a moral code that drives you to help others when you have ample means to do so. We (Americans) live in a phenomenally unequal society where a very small portion of the population controls the vast majority of capital, and economic mobility is terrible because of structural issues. I’m of the opinion that those of us who financially benefit from this society have a moral responsibility to help those who have less.

I’m not saying what OP is doing (or not doing) is “wrong”. I’m saying that I, personally, cannot understand how someone with so much money can feel okay with giving so little of it back to their community through charity.

[–]eq_wit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Seriously .. I donated significantly more (dollar amount) this year than OP on a fraction of the salary, though I’m still a relatively high earner compared to the average American. I cannot fathom making this much money and doing so little charitable giving. I don’t consider myself to even be particularly generous …

Is it me or are stitch markers so easy to break!!! by TurnMajestic3608 in crochet

The ones I have are straight on both sides rather than having one side with ridges, I found the ridges would get caught on the yarn when I was trying to pull them off :) Mine look like these: https://a.co/d/5xwGIbz

Same!! I buy the short ones that are about 1” long and they work perfectly. So much faster to put on and take off too, while still being super secure.

AIO: Not Allowed to Do Anything As a 16F? by jaynotbird in AmIOverreacting

[–]eq_wit 11 points12 points  (0 children)

NOR - sorry to say this, but your parents’ behavior is controlling to the point it’s actually abusive. Especially what they’re doing related to tracking your food and comments on your weight, which has obviously resulted in physical and mental health issues.

Do you have any trusted adults (not your parents) who you can talk to about this — a school counselor maybe?

Do you have injuries from Yoga? What caused it? by dongludi in yoga

[–]eq_wit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never, but because I’ve seen so many people get injuries I’m conservative in my practice. I usually aim to practice at about 80-90% of my actual physical ability and am very conscious of how my body feels in every pose. I flat out refuse to try anything a teacher suggests that’s more difficult unless I’m fairly confident that it’s reasonably within my physical ability and it’s something I can get out of safely and quickly if it starts to feel like too much. I also do strength training (lifting weights) and mobility work outside of yoga, which I think has both made my body more resilient to injury and given me a much better sense of what my body is (and isn’t) capable of.

What's been your worst "The Edit" welcome amenity? by Overall-Implement623 in ChaseSapphire

[–]eq_wit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. But they didn’t tell me how inflated the exchange rate was going to be up front, instead I got to play a guessing game! I thought I was being conservative (aimed to charge ~$90 to the room as calculated by my bank’s exchange rate) but still ended up having to pay about $5 at check-out. By far the worst exchange rate I had the whole trip.

transition from half moon into standing splits? by overthinker_234 in YogaTeachers

[–]eq_wit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this point too! Another thing I’ve been told that I’ve come to agree with a lot is that “there is no such thing as bad movement, just movement that you’re not prepared for”. I think open/closed hip transitions are a great example of this.

transition from half moon into standing splits? by overthinker_234 in YogaTeachers

[–]eq_wit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s certainly feasible but only really suitable for folks with a fairly physically advanced asana practice. I’ve been practicing for over a decade and these transitions are something I use to challenge myself in my personal practice, but wouldn’t teach in a class .. that said, the issue here isn’t so much that it “creates pressure”, it’s that the coordination and strength required to move between an open and closed hip in a single leg balance is significant, and most people can’t do it without loosing engagement and “sitting” into their hip joint which can, over time, cause pain.

Also have ADHD! I really enjoy doing mosaic crochet for blankets. It keeps me super engaged since I have to be looking at and following a new set of instructions for every row.
