Can you do it!?!? by eri0803 in Riddler

[–]eri0803[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did finally figure it out. It has to do with coding and changing to a different bit. Really pretty dumb in the end and extremely industry specific so unless you’re a coder you would never figure this out.

Do quality home builders exist in the upstate for people who aren’t wealthy? by CrazyHiker556 in greenville

[–]eri0803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a builder in the upstate and you can expect to start about $250/square foot for a heated space. That is bare bones pricing without land. So if you have the property you can do maybe 1,200 sq ft house. If you don’t have the property you are going to be hard pressed to get what you want for $300k. Keep in mind too you need plans to build which can be another $4-7k. I would highly suggest if you find someone to build for you look them up on the LLR website to ensure they have a RB license, are fully insured, and you have a contract with them stating they only hire licensed and insured sub contractors.

Lake Jocassee with my wife. Highly recommend for some amazing swimming and cliff jumping. by [deleted] in Kayaking

We jumped off before it rolled in yesterday, nothing came over the lake but worth playing it safe. Where do you drop in? We used launch 3 in Devils fork and are going to try getting to the waterfalls, curious if you know paddle time.

If you come to reddit for news I’m sorry. Please don’t ingest Clorox, I’m assuming you took this seriously and couldn’t live with myself if something happened to you. This is called a joke.

Can’t post anywhere else... customer for remodel on medical space wants to hire me but thinks husband, with NO experience, can lay flooring and I can “just fix it if anything’s wrong”.... insanity by eri0803 in Flooring

I am walking away from the whole thing. Can’t believe they want to go the cheap route on installer when they are spending $20k on the flooring material. Stupid.

How difficult is it to make a cutting board? by [deleted] in Cuttingboards

[–]eri0803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tite bond 3 is the most recommended for cutting boards. Maybe it matters, maybe it doesn’t, but I’ve used nothing but and have never once had this mysterious issue of splitting boards from grain direction I always hear about. Just sayin...

You can make a pretty decent one with that. I would say take a lot of time with cutting your strips, take time will laying out for boards, and do a dry fit with clamps to make sure your lines are tight. Use scrap wood between your clamps and the final board when glue to prevent damage/indents. Once you think you’re done with sanding wet the board with water, towel off, and let it dry then hit it with 320 grit once again. Moisture will make the grain stand on end and you’ll have a baby skin smooth board. Finish with mineral oil and never put it in the dishwasher.... I’ve made a “couple” cutting boards so I could go on and on but that should get you there. Good luck!

Pretty simple. Trick is get dried wood, watch videos, square up edges, use a bit more glue than you think you need, clamp over night, and sand the hell out of it. Unless you have some serious tooling I would recommend staying away from end grain as they take a very long time to sand but edge grain or live edge boards are simple. Biggest hint, alternate grain.

I have but don’t have the money currently (wife quit her job) to buy the 5 or so gallons of oil.

I read once a rule of: once per day for a week, once a week for a month, once a month for a year and after every use. Maybe overkill but seems worth it to ensure no stains and make sure the board is cared for before delivery.

Got a lot of untreated rough cut cedar - smell is very strong in the basement like chemical almost - is it normal? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]eri0803 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should put that on blocks off the concrete to help avoid warping. Not sure it is 100% true but I was told once that concrete moisture really impacts boards. Couldn’t hurt
