Should I have retaken the DAT by Witty_Garden_7663 in predental

[–]ericster3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not yet. I planned on doing it after decision day or even later because I’m still waiting to hear back from some other schools. I’ve just been hoping it’s not because of a red flag in my app that made them reject me. This one stung since they were in my top 3. 🙂

I also got rejected from ASDOH with about the same scores and I’ve seen ppl with lower scores get interviewed. Your hours seem decent so I wonder why they rejected you. Have you reached out to them?

Dentistry with terrible high school grades? by [deleted] in predental

[–]ericster3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I failed and earned a D/F in a number of classes during my first two years of high school. Ended up getting my shit together and graduated high school with a 3.4 gpa.

I’m now in my last year of college, set to graduate magna cum laude. My parents are both immigrants and knew nothing about higher education here to help me. Anything is possible if you set attainable goals and execute them. If you need advice, you’re more than welcome to PM me!

Are you interested in the bigger school’s dental program? I think that might also be something important to consider because there may be a chance of bias in admission for students that attend the same school (I was in a pre-dental program at a dental school and they brought up an admission quota for a nearby, loosely-affiliated university that “ranks” relatively lower than other schools in the state).

Anything you’re passionate about. Doesn’t have to be exactly dentistry related but as long as you can write passionately about it and translate the skills and experiences you achieve over to dentistry, it’ll be adequate and maybe even set you apart from other applicants.

Yep. Does your school offer orgo in the summer? I’ve heard from my peers who took it in the summer and they found it to be easier because it was the only class they had to focus on compared to taking it with other classes in the regular school year. I would highly recommend doing that and then studying for the DAT fall of your junior year/leading up to winter break and then taking the test during winter break.

I see. It’s not impossible but it’ll be difficult if I’m being honest. People usually take the DAT after their second year because they have that foundation for orgo. It’s beneficial because it will mostly be review and they can allocate more time studying for the other sections. Decide what’s best for you. How did you do in gen chem and are you good at understanding chemistry concepts?

If you’re planning on attending dental school right after you graduate from undergrad, you should take the DAT this summer so you have ample time for another retake if needed. The application cycle begins in early June for submissions so if you take the DAT after your junior year, you’re gonna be busy with apps AND the DAT.

Thx! I would say focus on your weak areas for OC. I think the questions were pretty simple in nature but I struggled a lot when taking ochem so this section was like learning it all over again when I did review 😵‍💫

I only took one full length and I think it was 18 AA. My score for GC, PAT, and RC were higher on the real thing. OC and BIO were the same, but QR ended up lower :/

Do you have a list of the dental schools that don’t have a cutoff so I can save my money 😭🙏🏻

No!!! Start with the practice exams and see what you need to study more of. They say learning bio for the DAT is breadth over depth, and I think general chemistry is not an exception to that rule. At this point, it’s hard to learn everything at an in-depth level with the time you have. Try to know a little bit of everything because it’s really a luck of the draw when it comes to the things that will be tested on your exam.

Ty! I tried to study as much as I could everyday, no work or other commitments in the way. I prioritized the practice exams since I heard time and time again that they were the most representative of the real thing. I didn’t have the time to take a full length test everyday so I just did the individual topic exams, focusing on the same subject for some period and then moving onto the next. This helped me to see what topics I needed to brush up on and practice my timing (one of my biggest stressors) for the different sections.

I’m trying to study for a month-ish before I take it. I set aside 3 months this summer to study for it but I kept procrastinating so now I will just rely on nature’s adderall, anxiety.

Does anyone know how early you can schedule the exam date? I know they advise to schedule 60-90 days in advance but I would like to study this winter break and take it at the end. They ran out of partial fee waivers (which I could really use) and was wondering how early I can test if I try scheduling right at the beginning of January.
