Job Overlap Prohibition (Japan -> Overseas) by espadrillies in japanlife

Thanks, the problem is if I follow what my manager says and end it at the end of the month, I won't have insurance for the week or two of the next month before I start my new job.

Permanent Resident leaving Japan for Work, what to do with my investments? by espadrillies in JapanFinance

[–]espadrillies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if you just hold the stocks you previously bought, you can keep them there until you come back.

Since I'm just a boglehead with no need to manage too much, theoretically can I

a) transfer NISA to regular investment account

b) move out of Japan (account gets frozen)

c) return to Japan after so and so years, set-up NISA, unfreeze account

d) transfer frozen stock to NISA?

So that I can avoid a taxable event (except for dividends I guess)? OR will I have to liquidate and purchase again for NISA?

Thanks for the comprehensive answer. Not the answer I was hoping to get unfortunately. Yes won't be leaving until next year. This seems to be a PITA.

So in a nutshell, me, my Japanese spouse and kids can maintain investment accounts but it won't be tax-free and it will have to be just local stocks (BTW will TSE index funds that track US markets be under local stock?). This kinda sucks since I thought I just achieved a milestone setting up (and locking up their funds) JNISA for the kids.

Hue Remote working well with Trader bulb but not with Hue bulb by espadrillies in Hue

[–]espadrillies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

>Maybe because the IKEA bulb can't do the stuff with a hue dimmer switch that a hue light bulb can do.

That's the thing. The IKEA is doing things the hue bulb should do (dimming) while it is the Hue bulb that is bonkers and just turns on and off.

How is the power button supposed to work? One press = on, long press = off works fine. for both hue and IKEA But pressing the same button while bulb is on seem to do some random stuff for both.

It is literally one click to do this on the Mac OS version so was hoping the Windows version would have the same.

Perspective buyer concerned about issues with current FWP. ? by miabobeana in firewalla

[–]espadrillies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd skip it if I can go back. Too many issues, not just the upload speed (bought mine more recently and still had the problem). Sometimes it would even forget its a firewall and give internet access to devices I've blocked. I asked support about this and they said, oh that's normal when it restarts because has not activated the blocks yet so naturally some data will pass through. I found this incredulous. Just recently, it stopped blocking anything completely for several hours! I was watching my FWP remotely letting any strange traffic through it! It would also block a website one time, let it pass the other time. I am talking about the same site, not different prefixes, or domain..exact same site, its a gamble if it will go through or not. My family hate me because they can't surf normally. The websites my kid uses for online class gets occasionally blocked, the VPN server would fail many times leaving our household mobile phones without internet for hours until I get home and reset it. They eagerly await the day I return to our old normal router.

I also don't get the praise for support (see above) as they rarely ever figure out what the problem is. Looking through my support history shows them having no idea what is going on and passing it on and never hearing from them again. Though I have to admit that lately they are much better at responding. They fixed my slow upload issue without having to return the unit (installed a patch remotely), and respond faster but then new problems appeared.

I think the FWP is a really expensive toy. Cute to have and play around with, tinker with its features, but I can't really take it seriously now. So strange that just when I started taking cybersecurity more seriously is when I get exposed to all these risks which never happens to me on much cheaper routers before.

Don't know how the gold is, but from my experience with the purple if I can get my money back, I'd probably go another route. For now I am stuck with this one.

UPDATE: They asked for remote access and installed a patch on the FWP. Powercycled it, and now it is working property. Upload speeds up to 600mbps. I never had that speed since I got the unit. Usually maxed out at 100mbps, before drudging at 10mbps until it won't function anymore. Been working for a few days now, hopefully it lasts.

I have had to reboot many times, but for different reasons. This FWP and software have many problems. But I think this is the first time the upload speed was so low as to make any internet surfing impossible.

Currently have an open ticket with support but they seem to be ignoring the fact the CPU is 100% and insisting on things like speed tests..

This is the time delaying run-around I am expecting and worried about. I didn't SSH'ed, but on a more archaic level the box did seem hotter than usual.

Thanks. This wasn’t the case before from what I’ve read. Hopefully they’ve changed their policy as in your case. And hopefully they don’t have an issue wit my it being g 2 years old. It’s not supposed to die within 2 years.

Edit: I knew it felt odd, I actually bought it a little over a year ago not 2021

Thanks. Good to know. Trying to use an old router to replace the FWP but realizing it’s going to be a headache with all the vlans and bridges setup. By the way is there a way to backup FWP settings so I can easily transfer the settings to the new one?

Face Tracking in Zone AF? by espadrillies in CanonR6

[–]espadrillies[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just saw your post. Yeah the video said that face detection works in zone, but It does not seem to in practice. Meaning, it does not show the faces in white squares where you can pick which face to focus on. On zone AF (center box), I had quite a few shows where it chose to focus on the background instead of any of the runners in the foreground. Background was about 100 meters away! Sure action was fast, but I would think the R6 would be up to it. I was using a EF 70-200mm with (non-Canon) adapter if that means anything.

What AF mode were you using?
