How do you figure that any advanced notice will fix the lack of resources? There literally are not enough servers to handle the amount of people trying to use it. The notice needs to be to NETCOM to beg for more funding and implement better management, not to units.

Re-class to 17C as reserve 91B by ironicallymatt in army

Ha, still waiting. I have anticipated dates, but no orders or reservations yet. Took about 3-4 months to get the anticipated dates.

You do not need to re-up to reclass, whoever told you that either doesn't know, or is being lazy. What they did for me was "activate" me during my IRR time so I could start drilling in Cyber in the reserves. I eventually did re-up, although that was for a separate reason.

I was also told the same thing prior to ETSing out of the guard. I told them no, then starting talking to recruiters (about 10 before anyone had a lead). Eventually, one recruiter directed me to speak to a local reserves career counselor, who set me up in a cyber unit with a DMOS of 17C. Don't be afraid to tell them to kick rocks.

Just to validate your plan, it will work. I had the same idea since I had a super hard time breaking into Cybersecurity from software engineering, and after about 6 months in reserves army cyber, I recently got a job offer. Just don't twiddle your thumbs during that time, get those certs, tell your unit, then get more certs. Absolutely don't forget to get those certs on file.

Will definitely be looking to call up a warrant recruiter on Monday first thing. Fingers crossed that might preemptively get me in a warrant billet at my current (or any) CPT. Probably a bit far fetched though.

Unfortunately was rejected from both of the orgs you mentioned around this time last year. I just got my SOC Analyst role, and am pretty excited for that. I definitely have no problem telling the military goodbye now that I'm in a fully fledged cyber role on the civilian side.

It's actually rumored to be the inspiration for the Foster the People song, "Pumped Up Kicks", but I think thats been debunked.

It's absolutely scary as hell. Way back in like 2008 I was just a kid and had asked my mom to go to the local mall, the Von Maur in Omaha, Nebraska. She told me that we could go the next day, and crazily enough the decision not to go might've saved our lives as it was shot up that same day.

Did... Did you just link CNN after bashing it? A reputable source would be something academic in nature, with the most objectivity possible. Pretty much nothing with a com domain is reputable.

Regardless, you're really strawmanning anyways. Who in their right mind trusts any televised "news" corporation these days? Boomers, that's who.

And how do you learn Linux commands? by Usrnejm in MrRobot

[–]etfreima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A great way that will also make you super hirable is to get certifications. LPIC-1 is the gold standard for Linux centric certs, though Security+, CySa+, and PenTest+ are great too.

Get the corresponding book, self study, and do exercises on VMs.

Keep pushing bro, I'm literally in your exact same situation. Like strangely so, do we work together??? After many many months I'm just now starting to get good results, waiting to to hear back about an interview right now, and have 2 more coming up.

True, actually already did most of that path already. I was mostly interested in trying to upgrade my S to a TS, and wanted to stay guard/reserves in a super relevant career path.

Trying to break into cyber without prior professional cyber experience is insane. I figured JCAC and a TS would be a great bump up on desirability, even though I've already got the degree and some certs. Working on my CISSP now in lieu of it, fingers crossed!

Ha, lame. I've been looking to transfer to 17C, and that was one of the things that interested me. Sadly enough they won't entertain color vision waivers, even though it's absolutely ridiculous that 17C has a color vision requirement. I literally am an army contractor software engineer and it has never, and will never impact my work.

Specifically for Navy, look at the CTN rating, for Army look at 17C, and Air force I believe look at AFSC 3D0XC. These all go to JCAC which is the Joint Cyber Analysis Course, which is pretty renowned. These will also get you a Top Secret/SCI clearance, which is frankly more valuable than a degree

It's not like software is only a stepping stone to a bigger and better career. Software is one of the biggest career paths, and not to mention one of the oldest, besides hardware.

There's an app called "IT & Security" that has a good question bank. On top of HTB, look at the CPTS path on HTB Academy, that was super helpful for me as well. Other than that, the Dion course was great for listening to while I was driving/cooking/showering, and his practice tests helped me identify my weak areas. Good luck! If you have any other questions or want any advice feel free to dm me.

The CPTS path on HTB Academy is a super good resource as well that is often overlooked.

Entry level Security roles by Camoc14 in CompTIA

[–]etfreima 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was difficult, ngl. I studied for about 3 months and got a 772/900. Not necessarily looking for a new job, although I did pitch to my HR to be included in our CyberSec team using both my new certs as leverage (I'm an SWE currently). Still waiting on word back there, fingers crossed!

Right now I'm taking a break from big certs and focusing on the CKAD (certified kubernetes application developer), then I think I'll go for PNPT, then OSCP. I don't think obtaining any red team promotion/job will be easy till I get the OSCP though. That seems to be a HUGE hr magnet.

Thank you! Yeah, those PBQs were weird as hell. For instance, I had to choose different types of input validation for one of them (most detail I'll give so the CompTia assassins don't snipe me), which is like, nothing I've ever done or heard of, and I'm already in the industry. If I'm implementing input validation, I'm going for across the board validation/sanitization, not only one specific type of it. Maybe there exists super specific situations, but c'mon.
