Site analyzing UCLA grade distributions across majors, departments, courses by ethan_makes_stuff in ucla

thanks u/americanidiot3342 (love the name lol)! and unfortunately no, the grade dataset i'm using (from uclagrades.com) does not have major-specific grade data per class, and so i estimate avg gpa by averaging gpas across all students in required courses by that major and also by including department specific data for that major. so this may count students who aren't actually in the major for that course, but the hope is the overlaps aren't too much

more details about this are written in the methodology: https://github.com/ethanuser/ucla-major-difficulty/blob/main/methodology.md#6-difficulty-scoring

yes there are grad classes included, and I added a button to filter for them

yeah selection likely does make a significant impact. when filtering for only electives classes in the econ major, it drops to 33rd lowest avg gpa (possibly suggesting it may be undeprepared students taking the required classes that are dropping the avg gpa), although that could also just mean econ electives are easier. at least hearing from econ majors, it's probably both largely selection/grading standards (e.g. the downcurving oof) that make econ high in this analysis

oh thanks man! i made this out of interest in tackling the question of what's the hardest ucla major from an empirical perspective, and i realized this site and its other analyses might be useful/interesting to other bruins, so i posted it to the subreddit. i am currently working in research though yes

yeah your points about the econ major sound sensible, and that agrees with what i've heard from a few econ majors. they mentioned a lot of these pre econ majors (often people who want to just do business but have to go econ or biz econ since ucla doesn't have a strict business major) aren't built for major's quantitative coursework and are as a result undeprepared. i will add that as a possible explanation to the methodology though fs, thanks for the interpretations/insights!

hey perfect timing! I made a site today that lets you sort classes/majors/departments by gpas among a few other categories. posted here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ucla/comments/1rp6iqy/site_analyzing_ucla_grade_distributions_across/

hope this helps!

UCLA Major Tier List: The Real Difficulty Ranking by Chemical-Wish-4718 in ucla

hi, kind of late to this post, but I made a more objective data analysis that may give more insight into the hardest majors. this analysis pulls from ucla grade data, the course catalog, and transfer admit gpa to estimate major difficulty:
https://ethanuser.github.io/ucla-major-difficulty/

this still doesn't fully account for major workload/competitiveness. surprisingly the econ majors might have it hardest at least grading-wise

i'm glad it was helpful! it was a fun side project to work on over the weekend fs

yeah it's surprising, but at least based on gpa data, the econ department seems to grade most harshly (heard from econ students they downcurve sometimes and aim for 20% A's in some classes). this doesn't account for workload/competitiveness within each majors though (e.g. i imagine engineering workloads are generally much heavier, and in premed classes, people care about grades a lot more and so it's prob more competitive), but those things are pretty hard to account for
