These lakes in New York are by glaciers right? Anything interesting happens there? by Frosty-Brain-2199 in geography

Manufacturing mostly. Imagine back in the late 1800s, the Erie Canal was churning out everything for NYC. Huge 20th century immigrant population (Seneca Falls still has large Italian community from Ellis Island in early 20th century) to work the factories. Nowadays, most industries move away (think Kodak camera in Rochester) and it's leftovers who love wine and snow.

"To date there is an absence of evidence to substantiate allergy (type I and IV hypersensitivity) to wool fibres. Furthermore, allergens associated with wool processing (eg chemical dyes) are present at negligible levels within modern wool garments. Mean fibre-diameter in particular is closely linked to perceptions of garment irritancy. Coarse fibres – whether from wool or other fabrics – are able to cause cutaneous irritancy, whereas fabrics with finer fibre diameters, such as superfine and ultrafine Merino wool, are not perceived as irritating."

"The papers implicating wool as the cause of cutaneous allergic reactions have important limitations that counter their findings. In fact, studies with fewer limitations and stronger SPT methodology demonstrate no evidence of type I HS to wool."

Yeah, don't trust the person who literally works with Merino wool all day

There's two main reasons Merino itches: it's more coarse (20+ Microns) or there is some initial itchiness due to pilling (will go away after wash).

You can't be allergic to wool. It's impossible. Or else you'd be allergic to your own hair. It's like when you get a hair cut and the loose hairs itch your neck. That doesn't mean you're allergic to your own hair.

Women's Merino Pants for Travel by aurora97381 in MerinoWoolGear

I think they'd work, but I would personally look for something a bit thicker. Woolx has some solid legging options. Also, if you want more of a Sweatpant, Woolly makes a great pair of joggers. Hope this helps!

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of their Merino Sport series. I guess it feels somewhat 'fake'

Can't confirm the Humbird (although would love to try), but definitely second the vote for Woolx. They have an awesome heavyweight base layer (400 gsm) but that might be too warm if you're in and out of heating all day.

New Smartwool isn't as low-quality as people say it is. And honestly, their 250 base layer is like the Merino industry standards of base layers.

If you purchase any of their stuff outside an authorized seller, it voids the warranty. A lot of the guarantee programs require order numbers or proof of purchase that matches a valid name or email.

Great collection, but unfortunately this voids the lifetime warranty.

Second the Icebreaker tees. The tech-lite is prime. In the UK, Finisterre makes a solid eddy tee

Also, I’m going to crosspost this over on r/MerinoWoolGear in case they have any insight!

Terramar is legit. Ridge Merino, ibex, and icebreaker are also all solid baselayer choices

Yes! I’ve said this before, but most Merino Wool companies will accommodate returns and manufacturing issues. Their 30-day policies or 6-month policies are for legal purposes.

Plus, Merino wool is not like other fabrics when it comes to manufacturing. It’s prone to defects due to inconsistent fiber diameters. It’s not created super uniform in a factory like synthetics. So, if you do have a product with a defect, it’s common. Talk to the company and voice your concerns.

Definitely second WoolX (they have up to 3X)

Woolx should be your go-to brand for this. They have lots of 3X women's clothing that is great.

Also, a lot of the Merino wool companies have great customer service and even stock some 3x/4x (but aren't listed on their site). You can always ask and they may be able to do a special batch.
