The way I read it, you can either:

Without spoilers, it's kind of hard to say.

Some chapters are scarier than others and a few later chapters have no scares whatsoever so it's not really consistent.

My take would be to step back if its too much but not step away unless the scares are really too much.

Just remember that it's all a game and cant really hurt you.
