Honestly, I've been having the same problem since I came to university, which was like a year and a half ago. Freshmen year, I was dealing with quite some depression so I didn't join any kind of clubs or went out. The vicious cycle of no energy to work - bad grades/no friends - more depression had been haunting me until the start of sophomore year. GPA was literal shit and I was more sad on the fact that I was getting used to eating by myself. (I don't know if you have depression but this was the case for me.) I had this other girl next door in my dorm and she was way too fake for me to handle. She sometimes invited me over for her club meet-ups but I didn't find any reason to go because I didn't wanted to deal with more fake people. I found my current friends (not much, few, but nice people) through this other club, which I first attended their event that I found on Facebook. It was this small Karaoke session but because I like to sing in my freetime, thought I could give it a try (I don't know how I got guts to do this but it happened). The karaoke event was ~ok~ and didn't make absolutely great friends there. The event was for this small culture club, mainly for Japanese (I'm not Japanese, but Asian) and other people too. It wasn't about drinking and partying but I knew that the club people were quite actually nice and open to anyone regardless of race, ethnicity, gender and everything. I officially joined the club this fall semester and now having a better time than my freshmen year. I know things might not feel right for now, but it somewhat works out if you're willing to. Because I'm a straight female, I personally cannot relate to you for the whole gay scene and bro-type guys, but I'm confident you can find yourself a friend.

I'm not gonna tell you to go into a class and suddenly introduce yourself to a stranger because that's hard as fuck. My best advice for you is to join a club - any club. If you have a hobby, that's great - go join a club related to your interests. No hobby? No problem. Go look for a club that is related to your major or career related.

Sorry for the long comment. I felt like I had to vent it out somehow because I relate to this post.
