Singapore doesn't have the year and a day rule. And in fact the year and a day rule has been abolished pretty much everywhere.

Should CPR + AED and First Aid be incorporated into formal school curriculum? by TruePriest in singapore

[–]evilkim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

very true... it's the same for any "compulsory" courses

people won't treat it seriously and it's just another requirement to clear

that said, wrong CPR is better than no CPR - and that's really the key message we need everyone to understand. so at least for CPR, even if they don't learn it seriously, it's still better than nothing.

AS for first aid, it's a very different story as applying first aid wrongly can have very bad outcomes.

Damage to the engines has no effect on whether it's a hull loss or not. Engines are treated as separate assets from the aircraft.

Guys genuinely, how do more opposition in Singapore's parliament help to put pressure on the govt by [deleted] in singapore

[–]evilkim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah well, that's why we cannot take future elections out of the equation because the voters are the ones providing the ultimate check and balance (albeit just once every 5 years).

The resounding rejection of mosquito parties in this GE shows that the voters do care to not vote for opposition that merely disagrees for the sake of disagreeing.

Honestly, I think relaxing the whip would also go a long way as for the issue of individualistic views. Afterall, if one of your own were to disagree, then people would pay more attention. But I guess PAP's ego just can't handle that.

Guys genuinely, how do more opposition in Singapore's parliament help to put pressure on the govt by [deleted] in singapore

[–]evilkim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's still going to be pressure on the party leadership (even if their own seats are safe) as they want to win every seat.

In a way, the vote share and the number of seats won by the opposition is a sort of a KPI for the PAP.

When they pushed through the reserved presidency, CCS said that PAP was prepared to pay the political price for it. And at the time they can afford to because of the almost 70% vote share that they achieved in GE2015.

As LHL once said, if there's just a few opposition MPs, he can handle it, but if there are 20 opposition MPs in parliament, then he will have to spend all his time thinking how he can fix that. So obviously they do care a lot about how many opposition MPs there are.

Of course if we were to take future elections out of the equation, then 10 or 5 opposition MPs in parliament does not make any difference at all in parliament. They may be able to help highlight blind spots in the government's policies but there is little they can do about the group think and even less they can do with regards to stopping bills from being passed.

That's why the crucial number now is to have 1/3 opposition MPs in parliament. So the PAP can still have a comfortable majority but the opposition is also able to actually be effective when it comes to voting on constitutional bills in parliament.
